Okay so you may recall my stance on season 8 of Voltron: Legendary Defender I posted way back in December. It went something along the lines of "Welp, it sucked. You tried, hon. Moving on."
After MONTHS of INTENSE PONDERING it has SHIFTED.
YES, season 8 was poo poo with a dash of caca. I've heard that Lauren Montgomery and Joaquim Dos Santos (the executive producers) were hostile in production and that many good ideas were scrapped. It ended up a damn mess.
But there's a side that I haven't heard anyone explore yet-
The biggest issue of the fandom that I've run into has been the SHIPPING. More specifically, KLANCE and SHEITH shipping. Everyone was pissed that Allurance was canon but handled so poorly, and maybe that it was canon at all based on the blatantly Klance moments even in season 8 itself.
The thing is, guys,
We, the fandom, are to blame. At least in part.
We were so hostile about the shipping in general that some resorted to death threats at which point I, and most of the actually good people in the fandom will say "step the quiznack back, Harold" because that's just DUMB and GUYS, IT'S A CARTOON SHOW RATED Y-7. Mental health issues much?!?!?! Not only that, but we forced so much on this one show that may have turned up perfectly fine if not for fans imposing so much on the producers and cast. Maybe Klance would have been canon if it wasn't such a controversial issue and if the writers weren't literally fearing for their LIVES. We ran them into a corner so they picked up whatever broken scraps they could find and made a garbage baby.
THAT SAID, I don't believe they did as best they could have. As I've pointed out before, there wasn't a whole lot they could to that wouldn't turn the fanbase into a dumpster fire, but they could have calmly figured it out so the plot was at least half way coherent. Like, ooh, you know what? Like FROZEN II is doing!!! These Imagineers knew they had so much riding on this movie that they took a whole 6 YEARS to plot it! And you know that with 6 YEARS of planning, scrapping, creating, recycling, and polishing, whether or not Elsa gets a girlfriend it's gonna be a damn good movie because they aren't throwing in the towel. Some people will hate it, but what else is new!?!?!? That's how it should be done.
But who am I to judge?
Tell me what you think in the comments.
And I know you probably already started your rant, Astrean, so knock me dead.
