hello everyone! this poem is one from my collection "c'est la vie," my first poetry book. most of them are about love or heartache, including this one. i chose this one because it uses a lot of vivid imagery and complicated metaphors that i think only really i can decipher. it's about a boy who, at the time of reading it, did not know it was about him. i could link him below, but i don't really wish to badger him while he's offline (or at all). he was... a smooth-talker. he did a lot of things that got me into trouble, but he's paying the price for it. i still love him, despite his f*ckups, but i've learned to let it go and move on. this was written before we started officially dating, when i found out he was dating someone and had been stringing me along for after their relationship inevitably ended (that should have been my first red flag!). anyway, here's crystalline.

 anyway, here's crystalline

not the real thing

still shining, still sparkling

the relationship wasn't real. it was beautiful while it lasted, but it didn't hold substance because he cheated. he didn't mean it. crystalline means crystal-shaped, which is supposed to allude to "fake" gems that have been forced into existence but have faults. "real" gems are formed over time by nature and don't have these faults. a gem can appear crystalline, but still be artificial.

even in the rain

yes, despite the pain

oil slicks are beautiful but the water's always worse off

oil pollution has always been pretty to me. it's a huge mass of rainbow-colored black swirls - you have to admit that's pretty. problem is, the water that's affected by that oil is forever ruined. the animals and plants in the surrounding area are poisoned, and the oil stifles and kills any creatures that are directly affected by the spill. it's tragically beautiful. our relationship slowly cut off my relationships with everyone else in my life. i felt all alone except for him. i'm now mending those relationships, but the damage was done.
