Joey slowly opened her eyes and attempted to place the unfamiliar surroundings that she found herself in. The pain she had endured earlier was gone, but it was replaced with a medicated groggy feeling that seemed to cocoon her whole body. But, for as confusing a feeling as it was, it didn't take long for her to realize that she was in a hospital room.
Her mind was fuzzy but the last thing that Joey remembered was laying on the floor at the ranch looking up at Evelyn's terrified and concerned face.
Evelyn had kept her promise, Joey mused to herself.
Evelyn had vowed to get her help and Joey was so grateful that Frank's mother had been there when she'd needed her. In fact, the very last thing that Joey remembered had been her trying to will herself to comfort Evelyn when she must have blacked out.
Now that Joey was in a better frame of mind, she wondered if Evelyn had been serious when she'd referred to her as her daughter. It had been comforting at the time, but Joey hadn't had the energy to dwell on such an emotional confession. She sleepily wondered if Evelyn was there with her in the hospital somewhere, but could barely move her head to look around so she closed her eyes again and drifted off to sleep.
Joey had no idea how long she had slept when her eyes flickered open again. She assumed that she was still in the same hospital room, but it was impossible for her to know what time it was since the room was so dimly lit with very little natural light coming through the windows.
She still had no idea what had happened to her to land her there in the first place. But she was starting to feel less groggy and needed to get some answers.
Joey tried to move her legs but couldn't. It felt as though they were encased in cement. It was when she was looking down at them, that she noticed a head of messy hair sleeping against her hand. She'd know Frank's floppy brown hair anywhere and tried her best not to wake him.
It was then that a kind hearted middle aged nurse strolled into her room and said she was pleased to see that Joey was already awake. The nurse gave her a sweet smile and then smiled down at Frank as she checked Joey's chart and asked her how she was feeling.
"Tired." Joey whispered and motioned to the nurse to whisper as well to not disturb Frank.
"He's been here all night, doll." The nurse proudly whispered to her with a warm twinkle in her eye.
"He's a good egg. How long have I been here?" Joey asked, her voice still feeling groggy and horse.
"At least 24 hours, doll. You came in yesterday afternoon according to your chart."
"Oh." Joey coughed and tried to clear her throat. Her throat felt weird and swollen and she started to hate how weak and helpless she was.
"Can I have some water please?"
"Sure thing, doll." The nurse smiled as she poured her a small glass of water from a plastic pitcher on her hospital table. "I'll go and fetch the doctor. She'll be pleased that you're awake already."
