True to her word, Evelyn came back to the hospital later that night. Visiting hours had long since passed, but that didn't stop her from checking in on Frank and Joey once Mary and Sam were safely tucked into their beds.
Frank sat by Joey's bedside and looked up from his book when he heard a familiar British voice arguing with a nurse just outside the door. Joey was still sleeping and he had a feeling that his mother wouldn't be deterred by something so conventionally common as the posted visiting hours. She was an entitled Adler after all, she'd never believe that those kind of rules would apply to her for one second.
Frank sighed and rolled his eyes as he reluctantly put his book down and got up to investigate. If Frank knew his mother, she'd never leave quietly. He figured that he would have to do some damage control before Evelyn either woke up the whole floor or got dragged out by security. As amusing a plight as that might be, he knew that not helping her out wouldn't do much to solidify their new found relationship. Because Frank really had to admit, he liked not fighting with his mother.
"It's okay, Emma." Frank deeply sighed with disapproval when he saw his mother going toe to toe with one of the nicest nurses that he and Joey had met during their small stay. "She's with me."
"Frank, honey." Emma greeted him with a big genuine smile; thankful that he was there to diffuse the situation. Evelyn Adler could be a lot to handle at times and Frank felt nothing but sympathy for her.
"Like I said. I brought my son some dinner." Evelyn inform her with an authoritative edge in her voice motioning to the large bags in her hands. "Or would you rather that he starve by poor Josephine's bedside? Doesn't that go against the hippocratic oath?"
"All oaths aside, I am kinda hungry." Frank smiled and layed on the charm until Emma shyly smiled back at him and shooed both Evelyn and Frank away. Effectively letting Evelyn have her way.
Frank winked at Emma as he opened the door to Joey's hospital room then quickly rolled his eyes at his mother as she walked in passed him into the room.
"Don't start, Frank." Evelyn warned him when she sensed his disapproval and judgement over her trying to strong arm her way passed the nurse. "Your dinner is getting cold."
"Wouldn't dream of it, mother."
Frank made use of Joey's hospital table as Evelyn set up a small fest for him. Apparently Mabel, Walter's cook, felt terrible about everything that had happened and was trying to make it up to everyone with food. Delicious food, nonetheless.
"How is she doing?" Evelyn quietly asked as Frank dug in and ate his chicken drumstick.
"Better." Frank answered with his mouth full. He hadn't really eaten anything all day and had no idea how hungry he actually was until he started tasting food. "She's been walking around a little bit, and the doctor has been impressed with her so far."
