With her arms extended inches above the floor, Dylan struggled against the vampire’s weight. Her back was flat against the cold tiled floor and her legs kicked as she tried to wiggle herself free. He held her pinned by her arms. Grunting as she used all her strength to push him off, Dylan snapped her head up in a quick motion. Her forehead slammed against the vampire’s nose and he screamed in agony.
It was enough of an opening to force her weight to the side and roll out from under his grasp. Flattening him to his back, Dylan struck his face with her fist. It stunned him only a few seconds as he used his leg to push her off. He was strong and she was still inexperienced in hand to hand combat. The force of the kick sent Dylan backwards straight through the banister of the staircase.
“Uh,” she moaned as she rolled onto her side; the carpeted stair dug sharply into her back.
The vampire gripped her ankle and dragged her toward the front of the store. Dylan’s head bounced against the two bottom steps and she brought her hands behind her head and padded the back of her skull. When he stopped, the vampire bent down to pick up her other foot. She jabbed it quickly to the side and struck him square across the face. The vampire released her ankle and held his face against the pain.
Rolling her weight to her shoulders, Dylan snapped her body up and landed on her feet. She struck the demon across the face with both fists. When she wound her arm around to sock him a third time, he grasped her arm. His claw-like fingernails scraped against her skin and the vampire grabbed Dylan tightly by the throat. She scrunched her nose and tightened her lips at the pain as she scrabbled against his forearm.
He lifted her by the throat and held her in the air a moment. Dylan’s feet twitched and she jerked her knees lifting them up as if she was walking on air. It was becoming harder and harder for her to breathe. The vampire was tall, at least a foot taller than the slayer, and was built like a linebacker. Years of feeding on the blood of his victims yellowed his sharp, boney fangs. Forcing her down, he slammed Dylan through the leaf opening of the counter. The cheap wood and gold bracer buckled instantly under the weight of Dylan’s body and they both fell to the floor.
Dylan gasped for air against the pain searing through her back and head. But she could not hesitate for long. Scooting by her elbows, she pulled herself fully behind the counter. A roaring laugh escaped the vampire’s throat as he watched his prey scuttle across the floor. He knew she was the slayer and expected her to put up a bit better of a fight than she had. Stepping through the broken opening, the vampire followed Dylan behind the counter.
The slayer reached her arm out for her purse and pulled it by the handle. It slid toward her and the large mouth opening spilled its contents on the floor next to Dylan. All she was interested in was the stake. The various cosmetics, hair ties, and wallet that followed were of no use to her at the moment. Just as she retrieved the weapon, her opponent grasped the front of her shirt and pulled Dylan to her feet.
“Give it up Slayer,” the vampire said. His breath was hot and unbearable against her face. Personal hygiene was not one of his top priorities, Dylan thought.
Sliding her arms between his, Dylan forced them to the sides and broke his hold on her tank top. She delivered a couple of quick jabs to his jaw and with all her strength, her foot contacted his stomach. He wheezed in pain and flew backward into the short end of the counter. Pressing her hands firmly against the counter, Dylan swung her legs and hip up onto the top of the counter. She hopped to her feet and took a few steps toward the vampire as she made her way down the top of the counter. He leaned to steady himself and held his stomach with one hand. Bending at one knee, Dylan kicked him once in the chest and once in the head before hopping to the ground.
