Slowly, I began to feel my body again, my aching body. Nonetheless, I couldn't see anything besides darkness. I opened my eyes, but had to close them again immediately. I tried it with blinking a thousand times on the second attempt, what worked a lot better.
Since I looked up to the ceiling the first thing that I noticed, was how unbelievably soft my underground was, way too soft for any concrete of an New York City alleyway. After some time, I went with the most logical answer: I laid in a bed. How I got here was subsidiary for now.
I could make out some medical equipment to my right sight without even the faintest idea what there were there for. The rest of the room seemed to be pretty ordinary: light colors , a big mirror, a small table right next to the medic devices and a cupboard.
Carefully, I tried to sit up, my left arm gave way as my shoulder emitted a stab of pain. What had happened again?
I wanted to go into the City, and then there were these Aliencreatures and something with Captain America...
My Shoulder hurt again. How did I got this?
"How are you feeling?, asked a manly voice to my left to my surprise, and I had to notice that I never even once looked in that direction since I woke up.
There, right next to my bed, sat someone. He had short, blonde hair, a charming smile and looked at me with worrying, blue eyes. I knew that I had seen this face before. His clothes were simple, normal jeans and a T-shirt. A brown leather jacket hung over the back of the chair he sat on.
As surprised as I was, I could only stare at him, answering his question with a confused "Ehm..."
Understandingly, he smiled at me: "I figured you'd be confused. I'm Steve Rogers, but I guess you know me as Captain America."
"Why would you tell me something like this?" was the first thing that came to my mind, as his words didn't make any sense to me, "Should you not hide your identity from someone like me if you are a Hero?"
"You helped me out in New York, in fact You even saved my life, even though it backfired in the end. I just thought it would be fair, when you at least know who you sacrificed your life for", explained the man. I just nodded slightly, trying to follow his argumentation as more and more of my memory came back. "And in my opinion we agreed on not talking formal to each other." An encouraging smile accompanied his words.
I was pretty nervous, talking to a hero of the nation and all, that I started winding a strand of hair around one finger.
"Right, I completely forgot about that."
I laughed a bit, what seemed to relief Steve. However, as my sight fell down on my strand I froze up. I stopped moving and just starred at my strand of hair.
"What's wrong?" Steve asked, noticing my sudden mood change.
I didn't answer. I turned towards the big mirror as fast as I could, what wasn't in the favor of my shoulder, but I didn't care.
I recognized my relatively small nose, my standard lips, reassuring. My Top was a bit dirty and ripped at some parts. A bandage covered most of my left arm, shoulder and upper torso. What had shocked me just now was my hair!
It fell down like it normally did, in blonde waves. At least for the majority of length. The ends were anything else but normal! They were blue. A strong, deep blue. They were like this for at least the last seven centimeters. My normal goldblonde yielded more and more towards the striking blue in a smooth gradient.
I snapped out of my trance, looked away from the mirror to examine the real deal. I didn't had anything against the color itself, but how in the world could that be???
Disbelieving, I looked up and into the mirror again, just to turn my surprise into fright. It wasn't just my hair, no, my eyes, too, had changed.
A blue starred back at me. Not my normal more light blue with the slight hue of green. They had taken on a clear sapphire blue.
"What happened?", now it was my time to do the questioning. I didn't move, I couldn't get my eyes off of my reflection, but my voice trembled with incomprehension.
I was able to see how Steve lifted his arms apologetically in the mirror. "We actually don't know. Your hair started getting blue almost immediately after you fainted out."
"What about my eyes?"
"Your eyes?"
"Yes, my eyes, they're sapphire blue!", I nearly yelled hysterically, " that's not normal, Steve."
I finally turned back to him.
He looked at me as if he wouldn't like to do anything more than to answer my questions. "We didn't know about that... I'm sorry. We don't know anything about this at all, I'd seriously liked to help you out with that, but I can't."
Some deep breaths on my part followed his words, trying to at least calm me down a bit. Getting all worked up now, wouldn't help me as well.
"Where are we anyway? Doesn't look like a normal hospital room to me with all the missing window and everything." I could at least try to get some other information.
"We're on the Helicarrier."
" The what?"
"The Helicarrier", he explained again, happy about the change of topic, "Imagine it as some kind of giant aircraft carrier that can fly."
"Great...", I said ironically, "I just looove flying."
I don't know what it was with me and being in the air, but I seriously didn't like it. I love the view from a high point, but I'd preferred it to be from a point that was on safely grounds.
"Then this might be your lucky day, it's not flying right now, but it could, if it's needed." Steve laughed, while trying to calm me down.
"Why are we not in a random hospital in New York?" I asked further.
Steve hesitated for a moment before answering seemingly cautious: "Well, since your hair did this change of color, the people I work for thought it would be best to treat you here under their monitoring."
I looked at him more confused than before. "They? Who are 'they' that they are able to decide that so freely?"
"They're called SHIELD", he started to explain, "But believe me, you don't need to know more about them at this point.
Normally I would have loved to get more information about all this, but It was clear that Steve wouldn't reveal any more details, so we did a new change of topic.
Some time went by while we chatted about more unimportant things, like what I wanted to do in New York, or the plainness of the room I'd have to stay in for the next days or so. Eventually I felt the tension of all that had happened fall off me, but that also meant that I felt more and more exhausted.
"Ehm, Steve? I'd like to rest a little bit and maybe get some sleep, if that's okay."
"Yeah, of course. You need some quality rest. I'll leave you alone then."
He stood up, Took his jacked and walked towards the door, while I lied down into the cushions.
Before Steve left the room with a wave, he turned back towards the bed again. "If something comes up, there's a red button right next to you."
I raised my head and nodded thankfully.
Never known strength ran through my body together with a feel of endurance but that was gone as soon as the door closed behind Steve and I felt just as exhausted as I felt before.
