Sometime after Chapter 11. Chrom
The quiet moments where the only people in the world were my wife and I felt more and more rare as the days went by. The constant pressure put on me as the King of Ylisse was taxing. I loved my kingdom, but being its ruler had its challenges. I knew things would settle down in due time, but for now, the busy chaos resumed.
I tried spending as much time as I could with my darling Anna. While our duties allowed for us to spend a good portion of our time together, there were still moments where we wouldn't see each other for long spans of time. I was happy with simply being in my wife's presence, but could anyone fault me for longing to just be in her presence alone?
Luckily, we could always find sanctuary in our chambers. In here, it was our own world, sacred to no one but us. Very few people entered save for maids or whenever there was an extremely pressing matter. This was our safe haven.
...However, as fate would have it, we couldn't truly ever be alone. But, with what was our constant company, I was perfectly content. Anna was with child. Our child. There was an actual human being growing within her as we spoke. Soon, our world won't just have two inhabitants: there would be three.
It was a long, tiring day of training with the Shepherds, one Anna wasn't able to participate in. I was comfortable with her still keeping up her exercise regimen (as long as she didn't do anything that would harm the baby) but I wasn't comfortable with the idea of letting her spar. She agreed, begrudgingly, but we both knew that it was for the best.
By the time I returned to our chambers, I expected her to be already asleep in bed. However, I was surprised to see the bed empty and a gust of cool, November breeze rush by. I walked out to our balcony and saw Anna, cloak around her shoulders and resting on the railing. A bit of anxiety pitted in my stomach at the sight of her so close to the edge, but I tried tampering it down.
Ever since Emm's sacrifice, I found myself unable to go near high up ledges without feeling waves of nervousness. I was trying my best to rid myself of this, but subconsciously, I knew this phobia would last. I knew Lissa felt the same way.
Steeling my nerves, I walked out onto the balcony. "It's a lovely night, isn't it?" I cleared my throat. I wanted to go and wrap my arms around Anna, but my feet wouldn't let me get near the edge.
My wife turned, one hand on the railing and the other resting on her slightly swollen stomach. Being four-months-pregnant, there wasn't that big of a bump, but certainly a swell. "Oh, Chrom. You're back." Being aware of my fears, she stepped closer to me.
Now that I was able to safely tuck her in my arms, a few of my anxieties flew away. "That I am." I pressed a kiss to her forehead. "How was your day?"
"Boring. Uneventful," she hummed. "You?"
"I only broke one training dummy today," I chuckled, breathing in Anna's scent.
"Very good! That's an improvement!" she laughed.
I moved one hand to her stomach. "What about the baby? How are you holding up?"
Anna placed a hand atop mine. "Besides the throwing up and distaste of all my favorite foods, I'm fine," she said. "Our child has had an uneventful day, too. I haven't been feeling that many cramps."
"I'm very glad to hear that." I smiled at her, pecking her on the nose. Then, I knelt down so I was eye-level with her stomach. "Don't give your mommy too much trouble while I'm away, all right?"
"You're such a weirdo," Anna sighed, running a hand through my hair. "Let's go back inside. I'm getting cold."
I stood, taking her hand in mine. "As my lady commands."
I led her back into our chambers, helping her sit down on the bed. "I'm going to get changed and I'll be right back. Try and warm yourself up while I'm gone."
She giggled, eyes twinkling. "Fine. But don't take too long. I prefer you warming me up."
"Tease." I quickly kissed her before taking off towards the changing area. Once I was finished, I walked back over to the bed, finding Anna already tucked in, blankets to her chin.
I crawled into bed, pulling my wife into my arms. "I missed you today."
"I missed you, too." She nuzzled her face into my neck. "I wish we could have more moments like these; where we could just be together and live somewhat domestically."
I chuckled, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Ah, yes, but life would get pretty boring wouldn't it?"
Anna embedded her hand in my hair once more. "With you, life is never boring." She smirked.
Rolling my eyes, I kissed her wrist. "Then I'm glad I can entertain you so, my dear."
Her eyes burned with playfulness. "But, you're right. Despite how crazy our lives are, I wouldn't trade them for the world."
I hugged her tight, mindful of her stomach. "Agreed."
I can't see Anna and me leading any different lives. This is just how we were meant to be. And I thank all my lucky stars that we just so happened to be meant to be. Fate works in a funny way, doesn't it?
