Real Friends

The hardest thing about dead friends, is what people say about them after. Talk about them like they knew who they were like they spent every minute of there day with them, those arrogant assholes know nothing. They didn't sit there and listen when Aaron broke up with Harmony granted she did kiss Eric but it was an honest mistake they're twins and she was a little tipsy, anyone could have made that mistake. They didn't know about Lauren's tattoo or where exactly it was. They didn't know that when Harmony was a child she had to get surgery so it made it harder for her to do things like swimming. They didn't know that Lauren was afraid of heights and threw up when we went to the Sears Tower. Nobody knew about those days we spent sitting around a camp fire drinking beers talking about collage and what we would do after, they didn't know anything.

I started into the semester 3 months late so sitting in class the first day was hard hearing everyone talk about them, it had only happened two weeks before school started and apparently was still a popular topic. The pain was still raw the wounds were still fresh and every single word they said hurt like a bitch.

I could hear her laugh before I knew she was coming into the room, she was fuzzy but I knew her well, or well enough.

I could feel her eyes on me. Karen.

"Fuck off bitch I can feel you staring." I said so she knew I knew it was her.

"How would you even know, I thought you were blind now." She said as viciously and venom filled as she could

"So you admit you were staring, good to know but keep your eyes to yourself." I said, then a clap emerged from the crowd of people I can only assume gathered to watch our public spectacle.

"Wow you guys are entertaining but we have a class that's going to start soon, also dibs on the seat next to blind girl." I heard a tumbling of chairs and a barrage of 'excuse me's' then a loud thump in the seat next to me.

"Look away everyone can't you see that I've already fixed the situation you may be gone now" he said sarcastically.

"I don't want you sitting next to me" I said trying to make my words sound hateful.

"Trust me yes you do, I'll watch your back you watch mine, did that sound insensitive?"

She flashed back to the day of the accident. She was sitting alone in a pizza place they frequented. If there was anything she hated it was waiting; she'd been sitting in the place for a half hour and they still weren't there yet.
Ding ding ding
"Oh my god did you see his face it was priceless" Harmony was wiping her eyes from laughing so hard.
"I know I can't believe that he really fell for that like what?" Lauren continued laughing.
"Sup guys, took you long enough" I said not hiding my disdain for there late arrival.
Harmony was still laughing to hard so Lauren spoke first
"Yeah sorry we're late, you know that weird guy you're friends with? kinda grabby but pretty chill?" That's when she began laughing again.
"Who?" I asked confused
"Chad Baker" Harmony said threw laughter
"Well," Lauren started off "we were just at the mall and you know how he just started dating the transfer guy well, the transfers not gay and just made a huge seen in the middle of the mall it was great," she couldn't stop herself from laughing. So far I wasn't amused.
"That's not even the funny part, Chad got so mad he pushed the new kid into the fountain and dumped is smoothie on the kid." Harmony was laughing so hard so was holding her stomach.
"That's not even the best part when the transfer got up I guess he didn't realize he had white pants on, he also had no underwear so you could see everything. Your friend Chad really knows how to fuck someone up." Lauren said laughing again.

She fell out of her daze because the new kid was shaking her.
"Hellooooo is anybody in thereeee?" He said shaking her by the arm.
"Let go you blubbering buffoon." I said yanking my arm free.
That memory had shaken me up, I remember Chad at the funerals he was the only one who was completely honest with me about how happy he was they were dead, because they weren't good people. I never thought of them as bad people to be honest so that shocked me.
His words to me exactly.
"You know I don't know how you stayed friends with people like them for so long and not hate yourself. I'm glad they're gone."
After that Chad moved, he wrote me occasionally but he never called, texted or emailed. Once a month I would get a letter or two just depended how much time he had. But I haven't actually spoken to him.
"So are you just not going to talk to me?" He asked that's when I smelled it that same musky smell from last night.
"No" I kept it to myself, I'd find out what he wanted if he came back that night.
"Wow this arrangement is going to work out well" he scoffed which I assume was followed by an eye roll.
This year sucked.
