The Arrival

Have you ever been to a summer camp before? What was it like? Did you have fun sitting around the campfire with all of your new friends who share a cabin with you? What about when you would swim around in the lake on a hot day and play games like Marco Pollo with all of the other campers?
You were free and you had an amazing summer where the only thing that you had to worry about was if that mythical creature a counselor had told you about was really gonna come to your cabin and eat your nose.
Your goal and the people who were in charge of the camp's goal was for you to have an amazing summer and just be yourself while you're at it. At Camp Etsachoice, their goal is for you to be the opposite of yourself.

The young brunette with a slight tan and a skinny torso hopped off of the bus that she had been sitting on for the past eight hours with other campers.
Her neon blue backpack was so stuffed it looked like it would explode any second. She had never been to a summer camp before and wasn't really sure what to pack, so she had brought some toiletries and a few of the mandatory camp uniforms.
Her mother had checked her bag several times before sending her off to make sure the brunette didn't sneak any "gay stuff" into her bag. The young teen would try to hold back an eye roll before unzipping her bag for her mother to look through it.

The girl, Millie Brown, stood just at the entrance of camp with other campers who had just spilled out of the bus.
Everyone was already socializing with old friends from last year, but Millie only stood there looking at the big bright blue banner with bold red words across it. 'Camp Etsachoice'. It hung between two trees just above the entrance of the camp.
"Do you get it?" She heard a rather soft and soothing feminine voice in her ear. Millie jumped a little and turned to her right to see a girl who looked about her age smirking at her.
This girl was very pale and had freckles all across the bridge of her nose and beneath her eyes. She had long wavy red hair that flowed around her head and over her shoulders.

Sadie Sink has came to this camp since she was allowed to at the age of thirteen, it being a gay conversion camp for teens thirteen to seventeen years old.
Year after year she would attend the camp and counselors, who were campers from previous years, would run into the ginger while monitoring camp grounds and roll their eyes in disappointment and disgust.

"What?" Millie asked so quietly that even she couldn't hear what she had said. She was absolutely flabbergasted to be talking to a girl and wondering if that was even allowed here.
Sadie chuckled and folded her arms before tilting her head towards the banner with her head. "The banner. Camp Etsachoice. It's sort of like a pun." She tried to explain to the brunette, as she thought she looked confused.
Millie glanced up at the blue banner than back at Sadie with an even larger expression of confusion.
Sadie kept giving out small and short chuckles. "Etsachoice sounds like it's a choice. You know, like how most people say that sexuality is a choice. You can choose to be gay or you can choose to be straight."

Millie looked the girl up and down, observing her for a moment.
She wore the camp t-shirt that all campers were supposed to wear. It was blue, almost as blue as the banner, and in the same red frontage as the sign it read 'Camp Etsachoice' across the chest area and on the back.
Millie wore the same shirt, as she was supposed to upon her arrival.
Sadie also wore high waisted blue shorts that had the bottom rolled up on each leg to expose more of her pale thighs. The t-shirt was tucked into the waistband.
The camp's "dress code" was that all campers and camp councilors were supposed to wear their camp t-shirts during the day unless swimming and they were to wear the shirt with either jean or khaki pants or shorts, but they had to be at least knee length. No embellishments.

"Well I can't choose. It's just how I feel." The skinny tan girl says after looking Sadie in the eye again. The red head scoffed and shifted her weight to one leg, leaning a little closer to her. "Do you really think homophobes think that way?"
Before Sadie's question could be answered, a whistle had been blown by a tall boy wearing a red t-shirt. It was the official shirt for all camp councelors. 'Camp Etsachoice' was in blue print across the chest and back. The boy dropped the whistle, letting it hang from around his neck as he glanced at his clip board in hand. Everyone focused on him as their voices began to fade.

"Good afternoon, campers! I'm Joe Keery and I am one of the camp councilors here at Camp Etsachoice!"
He spoke loud enough so the crowd of young teens could hear him.
"We're happy to have you all here, as our goal is to shape young men and women and guide them towards the right path to their future!
We are no longer a religious camp anymore as of this year due to new directors, so none of you will have to listen to any of that Jesus mumbo jumbo!
In fact, a lot of updates have been made to this camp and those of you who have came here years before might notice as you're walking around!"

Sadie felt relieved that the camp was finally done trying to not only turn her straight, but to turn her into a Christian.
Her second year at Etsachoice, a counselor would come to her cabin every night and make everybody pray to god for forgiveness.
Sometimes the menacing red head would tune out whatever bullshit passage she was quoting and think about herself sitting on the big rocks beside the lake with other female campers.
Sadie would smile by the end of the prayer and the counselor thought that she was really getting through to her, but Sadie was only fooling her and everyone else around her.

"Now we have a lot of stuff we need you all to do before we get settled in and unpack!
When I'm done explaining everything to you, I need you all to line up at these tables here near the entrance so our counselors can give you all your cabin number! You will be sharing a cabin with at least five other girls or boys!
Once you get your cabin number, you will go to your cabin and set your stuff down then make your way towards the dining hall where our camp directors will give you a real camp greeting and go over all of the rules with you!
After that you all will be served dinner and you may go back to your cabins or you can meet me and a few other counselors by the fire pit near the lake for s'mores, singing, and more!"

Millie felt like his voice wasn't as cheerful as a camp counselor's voice should be. She had seen plenty of movies and television shows about camp and the counselors all looked so energetic and like they had a line of cocaine with their coffee that morning. They were happy and all smiles when speaking to campers. This guy was like a principal at a school assembly, boring but loud.
After his speech, everyone had done as they were told. Millie stood in a line for a table with Sadie still standing beside her. Neither of them spoke and it felt pretty awkward to Millie.
She decided to act confident towards this girl and introduce herself.
"I'm Millie." The tall brunette held her hand out for her.
Sadie smiles at her as she took her hand. "Sadie. This is my forth year here." Millie was shocked to hear that and didn't know how to feel.

"Forth year?"
"Yep. I'm never gonna change how I feel just because some "saved souls" wearing red shirts told me to."
Millie really liked the girl. She felt like they could be good friends and was secretly hoping that they would share a cabin.
The brunette chuckled slightly after letting go of her hand. She didn't want to face the consequences of holding a girl's hand for too long. Sadie could sense that and felt almost annoyed.
"Is this place fun? The website said that it would be like a normal summer camp but with group conversion therapy." Millie had questioned, hoping that it really would be like a normal camp and nothing weird.
Sadie only nods. They don't talk anymore.

So this is the first chapter for my new story Camp Etsachoice. Please leave some feedback and tell me if you liked it or if you thought it was kind of boring or unnecessary.
I just didn't know how to start this book so I apologize if it wasn't the best way to start this, but I promise that the rest will be much more interesting and fun and maybe the chapters will be longer.
Just give me your opinion on the story so far.🏕
