On Wednesdays, campers are encouraged to send letters home to their loved ones.
Natalia and Joe were going around
the same room they got their campers
together for therapy to pass out clipboards,
a sheet of loose leaf paper, an envelope
and a pencil of course.
"If you can't remember your home address,
please let us know and we'll come around to help you."
At some point, Nat and Joe crossed paths and
he gave her a firm pat on the butt.
She didn't say or do anything.
Not in front of the campers.Millie began to write this:
'Dear Mum & Dad,
I don't understand why you've sent me here.
I don't hate it here, I just can't fathom why
you would send your own child to a camp
that is supposed to "fix" me. How selfish
could you be to not let me embrace my
sexuality and be myself? I understand if
the whole sex tape thing was too much, it
honestly was a mistake, but sending me
to a conversion camp that's supposed to turn me straight doesn't seem like the most appropriate method of punishment.I'm sorry if I've disappointed you with my past decisions. I'm disappointed and disgusted with myself for what I did in front of that
camera. I knew it was wrong before I did it,
yet I did it anyway and it was stupid. I'm
so sorry and I miss you both.Love, Millie
PS. I made a lot of new friends'Then there was Finn's letter, which
was a little untraditional:'Eric and Mary,
Yeah it's me, your son.
Thank you for letting me hang with my besties
this summer, we're having a blast.
I also am in love with this new boy, but we
haven't done anything yet. :(
Anyway just write me back ASAP so we can
gossip or whatever.Finn'
And then there was Sadie's letter home:
'To my two biggest fans,
Hey, it's your butch bitch Sadie! Actually I
wouldn't say I'm butch, but you guys would
because you encourage this behavior by
giving me those cute little nicknames like
faggot, lesbo, carpet muncher, dyke. So sweet.I'm having some fun, flirting with a couple
gals here and there, making out with some
curious sinning hotties. Best summer ever!
There is this one girl I really like, she's in my cabin. I've thought about making a move on her, but I'm scared she'll reject me. Technically I already tried to make a move on her but she did reject me.Anyways, goodbye and don't write back.
SINcerley, Scissoring Sadie'
Finally, Gaten's letter:
'Mother,
Camp Etsachoice is pretty great! I know you might not like the sound of this, but I've made lots of friends. They don't pressure me to be like them or even find me as attractive as you think they would. They're all really kind and encourage me to be myself and befriend whoever I want.
The activities are pretty fun though. I've swam across a whole lake and back, played volleyball with a few of my fellow campers and I do partake in arts and crafts like building bird houses out of popsicle sticks.
I want you guys to know that gay people really are no threat. They're not as bad as you make them out to be. They're just like you and me, the only difference is they love a whole different group of people and that's okay. It doesn't make them bad, it's normal to feel like that.
From your son, Gaten'
🏕
After that group, Dacre and Maya's group
was next for the therapy room.
Dacre needed to prove that he was straight to Joe, so he tried flirting with the older girl.
"H-hey Maya? Do you think maybe after
this we could...play tether ball together?"
He felt like a little boy asking his babysitter
to entertain him.
Maya shrugs, thinking nothing of it.
"Sure, sounds fun."
She casually answers before handing Caleb
a paper and pen.Caleb thanks her and writes his letter:
'Dear Mom and Dad,
Camp is great, but it's not working. I know
I've only been here for five days and this is like my second year here, but honestly do you really think I'm gonna come home straight after this? If it didn't work last year, it won't work this year and this is the last year I'm allowed to attend Etsachoice as a camper. Just let me be gay!Yours truly, Caleb'
Last but not least, Noah's letter home:
'To my mother and my father,
I am deeply sorry that I've disappointed you with my actions and such. I'm really focusing on becoming better for you two so I can be the son you've always wanted. I think the conversion therapy is really working and all of the activities for the boys are really setting me straight. I don't really find any boys here attractive as much, but a little more therapy could probably fix that. I wanna make you guys proud and I will.
Sincerely, Noah'
🏕
The six gay teens all sat together at lunch after writing their letters earlier.
Their counselors would send them off to their parents later.
It was quite between the small group
before Noah finally spoke up.
"I lied in my letter."
Everyone looked to him curiously.
"What do you mean?"
Millie questioned, swirling a spoon around
her pudding cup.
The young boy sat up straight, nervously taking a deep breath.
"Well...I'm gay."
"No. For real? Come on."
Sadie exaggerates before Finn hit her in the chest to get her to shut up.
"I'm serious," Noah starts.
"I can't help it. I wanna change, I do, but my
feelings have only gotten stronger since I got
here and I can't figure out why."
Millie chuckles to herself.
"I know why."
She mutters, though everyone heard her.Noah looks at her.
"Why?"
He asked.
The brunette girl glanced up at him.
"Well you're around us and we're all about embracing our sexuality and not being ashamed of it the same way you're ashamed of yours."
Sadie admires how sexy she can be when she gets all smart.
Noah nods and looks at his lap sadly."Well I tried convincing my parents that gay people aren't bad in my letter."
Gaten announced.
Everyone smiles at him and then they got quiet again till Millie spoke up.
"I don't think my parents would have sent me here if I hadn't made a sex tape."
Caleb chokes on his PB&J.
"Your what!?"
He screams out while Noah just looked so surprised.
Finn furrows his brows.
"You haven't told them yet?"
Millie shrugs.
"Can we see it?"
Sadie asked.
Millie shyly looks around at everyone.
