I woke up being shaken and my name being called. I couldn't open my eyes from the exhaustion, but how long had I been asleep? I force myself awake and I look at Cole. His eyes frantic he put a fingers up to his lips. "Come with me." He sticks his hands out to me and helps me up. I look around and see that everyone is still sleeping and he rushes me outside.
"What's wrong?" I ask and he simply rubs his hands down his face.
"I fell asleep on watch and when I woke up I swear I saw something. I couldn't see them, but I swear they were close." He says this and looks out into the field.
Considering how late it was the only light that lit the land was the moon and the stars. I try to focus and observe the dark in hopes to spot something, but all I saw was black. "Maybe you were just dreaming?" I turn to him and he looks at the ground.
"Maybe you're right. I guess I'll just go to bed, do you think you can keep a look out?" I notice the tired look in his eyes and it reminds me we've all been running. Not just me. I nod and he shuffles inside closing the door behind him.
I look off into the distance and I just take in the air. Unlike the city, it wasn't as suffocating, or loud. I always wanted to move to the suburbs, but since my mom was a doctor it was never really an option. I hear a twig snap in the distance and instantly I was ready. We didn't have much weapon wise, but I grab the kitchen knife that I saw laying on the porch. I assumed Cole left it there in case of an emergency.
I walk out into the field and the wind begins to pick up. It was almost howling and the cold creeped its way onto my skin. I look around slowly and wait for another snap.
All of a sudden something jumped at me from the dark and I screamed. I couldn't see exactly what it was, but all I know is that I threw it off of me with sudden strength. I raise my knife and finally look at what had jumped onto me. I had instantly brought my knife down with a crunching noise filling the air. My heart stopped when I saw that my knife hadn't pierced through a freaks skull, but in the side of a bunny. I drop my knife and put my hand to my mouth.
I just stabbed a bunny. I wanted to cry. Its breathing was shallow as it struggled to move. I streak it's dark soft fur and I begin to hate myself. Never in my life did I think I would kill an animal. Not even if I was starving. Tears slipped down my face and I laugh. The whole worlds gone to shit and I'm over here crying over a dying peter the rabbit.
I look around me and I notice the sun begin to rise. The colors mixed in with the darkness until the orange hues tinted it away. I never got to see a sun rise and now I see why everyone made a fuss about it. It was beautiful; the animals began to wake up and the sound of birds could be heard all around. It made me feel wheezy inside.
I grab the small figure into my arms after pocketing my knife through my belt loop and make my way back to the old house. Quietly, I go inside and set the bunny down on the counter. It was still breathing and that gave me hope. Running to my bag I pull out, one of the many first aid kits I grabbed and make my way to it. I look at the stab wound and grimace; It wasn't too bad because when I stabbed it I wasn't aiming and didn't put in a lot of force. I hear movement behind me and I turn to see Veronica rubbing her eyes. "What are you doing?" I looked down at the bunny and the guilt washed over me once more.
"I accidentally stabbed it. I swear I thought it was one of them, I didn't mean for this to happen!" I tug at my hair and Veronica pulls me into a hug cooing me quietly.
