The steady beat echoed in my ears. I felt my finger twitch. The movement burned, but I kept forcing it. A moment later, I opened my eyes. It's dark and there's flowers in the windows and on the floor. The beeping didn't stop as much as I'd hoped it would. It's starting to annoy me. There's a familiar body lying on the couch. My first instinct had been to pick up my phone, but it hurts to move.
Oh well, I'll scold Maverick later.
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. I cleared my throat a few times. "Cash?" I asked, my voice weak. "Cash?" I said a bit louder. He stirred a bit. "Cash!" I exclaimed. He shot up, eyes roaming the room. It took a minute for him to process that I'm awake. Once he realized, he ran over to the bed and hit the red call button. He then placed a kiss on my forehead. Nurses and a doctor ran into the room. Cash gripped my hand.
"State your name." The doctor said as I nurse checked my pupils.
"Raine Willson." I replied.
"How old are you?"
"Seventeen and a half. My birthday is May eighteenth. My siblings are Alexander, Alexavier, Austin, Alister, and Asher. My adopted siblings are Carter, Lucilia, and Layla. My best friends are Maxwell, Tyler, and Jonah. I know my parents' names, but won't say them allowed. The boy beside me is my boyfriend, Cash Baker." I spat out, shocking everyone in the room. I've had this done a few times.
"What's the last thing you remember?"
"Zephan carrying me away from the crime scene." Why do I remember it so clearly?
"Before that?"
"Everything that I'm not allowed to speak of."
"Where was your family throughout this event?"
"At home. I traveled to Orlando with Cash and his siblings who are both above the age of nineteen. Now, would you tell me what's wrong with me?"
"Yes. It is a miracle that you're alive, Miss Willson. You've been in and out of sleep for four days now, but never slipped into a coma. You suffered from four bullet wounds. One in the shoulder, one in the leg, one grazed your stomach, and one in your hip. You shouldn't be alive." The doctor stressed his last sentence. "Consider yourself extremely lucky."
"How long am I stuck here?" I asked, impatiently.
"Not much longer." The doctor explained other things to me before leaving. Once they all had left, Cash spoke up.
"Don't fucking scare me like that, Raine." He growled. "And don't you dare go thinking you're going to die and asking me to forget you." My heart sank. "I care about you, Raine. I need you with me, alright?" I softly nodded. Cash pushed his lips on mine. I let him have the control for multiple reasons. One, he's hurting and probably feeling betrayed from what I said to Maverick about having him forget me. Two, I don't think I have the strength to fight back. Three, he's, hopefully, happy that I'm awake. And four, I'm not too sure if I deserve to kiss him back. Cash placed his hand under my chin, tilting my head back just a bit. He also pushed closer to me. I gave in, kissing him back. I weakly reached up and cupped his face. We kept kissing with short breaths in between until we complete ran out of air. Cash was the one to break the kiss. He rested his forehead on mine. My hands had fallen. One had rested on his shoulder and the other weakly held his forearm. "If you agree to lots of resting, you can go home in the morning." Cash whispered.
"That depends on whether or not I'll still have you as company?" I whispered back. My eyes are slowly getting heavy. I blinked a few times.
"Raine, I'm not breaking up with you. Unless your reasoning is terrible. I don't want to leave, so I'm hoping your reason isn't stupid."
"Well, it's not in my mind." I started off. The hand on his forearm moved to grab his hand, holding on as tight as it could without hurting. "I didn't think I'd make it. My first priority was to make sure you were safe. Not only do I care for you, but it's also my job. Maverick wanted to help me, but I didn't let him try. Then Zephan showed up with Mychael right after I called the nearest agency for help. After that, I fell asleep." I recalled in a soft voice. Cash softly rubbed my knuckles. "I didn't want you to be hurt if I didn't make it."
"Of course I'd be hurt, Raine. I'm your boyfriend and I care about you. Nothing is going to change that. Nothing." Cash gave me a gentle kiss on the forehead. The doctor came back in the room. Cash gave me a scowl then put on a smile and turned to face the doctor. My eyes grew heavy again.
"Don't let her fall asleep." The doctor said. My eyebrows furrowed then I glared. I like sleep. "With her recent sleep habits, she could fall asleep and not wake up again."
"But she was shot. Rest should be the number one. And, this is the longest she's been up." Cash argued, his own eyebrows knitted together.
"Yes, but she could drift into a coma." The doctor shot back.
"I just kissed him for like ten minutes and we've been talking." I jumped in. "Also, if you were worried about me-" I paused to yawn, a small squeak leaving my lips. "-then you wouldn't be offering to send me home by tomorrow morning. Another thing is this. Cash, would you give me my wallet." Cash reached into his bag that's by where he'd been sleeping and pulled out my wallet. He handed it to me. I opened it and pulled out my license. "I'm Agent Raine Willson, my health care is not to be monitored by a small town doctor, but the infirmary at an agency." I showed him my card. "I will be sleeping seeing as talking is proving to be a work out and I will be leaving now. I've suffered worse than a gunshot."
"Who's care, at home, will you be under?" The doctor asked.
"Cash and his siblings as well as my parents and my siblings. Hell, I'm sure Cash's mother would help." I growled. "I hate hospitals, hospital gowns, doctors, sick people, and cramped rooms with white walls. Also this machine and it's annoying beeping!" I hit the bed in frustration. Cash grabbed my hand, rubbing my knuckles. "Can we go now?" The doctor nodded and signed me out.
"Can you even walk, Raine?" I bit the inside of my cheek.
"No..." I whispered. "But I have this amazing boyfriend who would love to carry me." Cash playfully rolled his eyes. "Are we in Florida still?"
"Uh, yeah. I'm going to get you some clothes. Zoe and Cody went out and got your suitcase from our hotel as well as brought my things."
"I want one of your sweatshirts." I mumbled.
"Okay." Cash helped me sit up and made sure I could stay before giving me my clothes. "Do you want me to call Zoe. She's still here for another day. Or a female nurse."
"Are you nervous?" I asked teasingly.
"Well, I've never... you know... I also don't want to somehow hurt you."
"Just turn around you, dork." I said with a smile. "If I need help, I'll tell you." Cash turned around. I easily pulled off my hospital gown then slowly put on my clothes. I had a small issue with the clip for my bra and that was it. I put on Cash's hoodie over my bra. "Okay." Cash turned to face me again. He helped me stand, letting me lean on him until I got used to the pain in my leg.
"I don't have plane tickets." Cash muttered once he finished getting the bags together.
"Not a problem." I replied. I grabbed my phone and called the nearby agency.
