"Night, mom," I call out to my mother, who's already shut away in her room. She snores, so I'm kind of glad our rooms aren't that close to each other's. And if I ever want to sneak out, I can do it without being as quiet as a ninja, which is actually a lot harder than it seems.
Stretching, I strip myself of my jeans and Superman T-shirt before pulling on a white tank top and some baggy sweatpants. Smiling at the beautiful design of my new room, I plop down onto my bed.
I shiver and grip myself for warmth. Why does my room feel so much colder than the rest of the house? I don't have a draft in here, do I? Of course, I'd get the coldest room in the house. Did my mom plan this? She can be pretty mischievous at times, so I wouldn't put it passed her.
Well, it's not like it's that big of a deal, so I pull my thick comforter over me and curl up in my soft sheets, letting my body slowly warm itself.
I slowly fall asleep with thoughts about my first day at school tomorrow. The year has already started, but it'll be my first day because of the move.
I've never really had a dream where I was conscious about it, so when I open my eyes to pure darkness, I'm not really sure what to do. I finally come to understand that I must be in a dream when the scene suddenly changes to the beach. The sand is pure white and nearly blinding. I can feel it move beneath my bare feet, and I suddenly hear laughter.
Looking off to the water, I notice what looks to be like a small family of four. Who I assume to be parents are laying back in folding chairs with an umbrella over their heads. In the shallow part of the sparkling, lapping water, are two boys. One looks to be aroun ten years old, and the other seems to be a little closer to my age, a teenager.
They both have creamy pale skin, lean bodies, and messy hair. Though, the older boy's hair seems to be more of a golden blonde color, while the younger one's hair is more of a platinum blonde hair color.
As if I flip a switch with the next step I take, the scene changes. The sound of their laughter dies out, and the ocean is suddenly storming. The rest of the family is gone, but the teen boy remains. He's staring out at the water, standing perfectly still. It's actually kind of creepy.
My eyes widen when it starts to hail, chunks of ice falling onto my skin, causing bright red welts the size of quarters to litter my skin quickly. I feel the sting of the impacts, but it doesn't really register.
I watch in horror as the boy with the golden hair lifts his leg, taking a step towards the raging waters. I wipe at my clouding glasses in dismay, bolting after the boy. Is he stupid? He's going to die if he goes in there!
"Hey, dude!" I shout, sprinting full speed at the mysterious person. "Are you crazy?" I continue, my pace remaining unchanging. "You'll die if you go out there!"
The minute my sentence ends, something horrifying happens. It's something out of a horrible horror movie, the mass of black bursting out of the swirling waters. I'm not entirely sure what the monster I'm staring at is. There's no definite shape to it, seeing as the surface of it is constantly shifting, as if completely made of darkness. Monstrous, terrifying eyes are a blazing red that seem to hold immense darkness and evil, that it makes me stop in my tracks. My legs ache from running across the sand, and my mind is berrating me for not making it to the boy. I'm supposed to be the hero, but all I can do is watch in terror as the beast opens its mouth and swallows the boy whole.
It lands with a thud that shakes the ground beneath my feet, and the sound of it growling in pleasure makes me want to empty the contents of my stomach in repulsion.
I wince with a hissing sound as more of the painful hail strikes against my bare, unprotected skin. Yet, no pain can compare to the utter horror I feel when the beast's gaze turns to me. My gaze widening, I take off in the opposite direction. Where there was once grass and a dock, there is now nothing but sand for what seems like miles.
I've always made fun of the people who trip and fall in horror movies. I always thought that falling is such a stupid thing to do, but I never really thought about how it must feel to run from something so terrifying that it causes your blood to run cold. I now know how it feels, shaking in my suddenly incoordinated limbs as the sand seems to drag me down, making it harder and harder to run away. Finally, I trip, falling like a sack of potatoes, my limbs flailing wildly in the hopes that I'll be able to catch and save myself.
I roll over, feeling the sand sting at my skin. What kind of place is this? My mind screams at me as I stare up into those unnervingly dark eyes of the monster. As it stretches out its maw, the jaw seemingly nonexistant, I shake violently in terror.
With a scream, I look away from my fate and suddenly find myself back in my room. It's freezing, and the fact that I'm dripping with a sticky sweat isn't helping. But I'm alive, and the thought alone makes me sigh in relief. During the ordeal, I knew that it was a dream, but it felt so real to me. Is that what they call lucid dreaming? If so, I never want to experience this again.
I groan when I glance to my alarm clock. It's about half an hour until I have to get ready for school. I sigh and lean against the beautifully styled wall. I rub at my tired eyes. It feels like I haven't slept at all. Growing uneasy from the dream, I feel myself becoming paranoid. Is someone watching me? I know that I'm probably just imagining it, but it feels as if someone else is staring at me. It doesn't feel mad or scary like that dream but instead feels curious and kind of helpless.
Laughing at my own thoughts and gazing around the empty room I sigh. "You're losing it, Alfred," I tell myself, rising up from the bed with a small creak of its frame.
I guess I should go shower, huh?
