We've been walking for a couple of miles, so we stopped for a small break. It's best to pace yourself instead of walking all day long with no breaks, I get out my journal again and flip to my notes of the different types of Corrupted. "Before we start walking again there's a couple of things that Mr. B didn't cover." I start.
"Like what?" Zoey asks, taking a bite from her sandwich.
"Well for starters, he didn't cover Wanderers." I point to the page and look up at them, "Wanderers are lone wolfs, you won't find them in large groups. They're mostly found in the woods, they're like Chameleons. They can blend in with any environment, which means that they can sneak up behind you and you wouldn't know until it's too late. So when we get into the woods we have to keep a watch out, you never know when one will pop up out of nowhere. He also didn't cover Shadows. If you've been Corrupted for at least 5 years, most of the time you turn into a spitter. Keyword 'most', that's not always the case."
"What happens if you don't into a Spitter?" Tristen asks, clearly confused as to what else could possibly happen.
"You turn into a Shadow." I flip the page and they see a picture of the silhouette of a Corrupted surrounded by a mist, "A Shadow, doesn't spit out the acid. It turns it into a blue and green mist, and if you breathe it in. It'll turn you into a Corrupted. Like Spitters, Shadows are blind, and they use their hearing as eyes."
"Why do they call them Shadows?" Zoey asks.
"Because the mist is so thick that you can't see through it. If you do go into the mist and have a gas mask, you're still most likely to get killed if you're not careful. Shadows use the mist to their advantage, if you go in with a gas mask you still won't be able to see. They creep up on you. Shadows are very, very, rare, and also very, very dangerous. Cause you never see them coming, they could be 10 feet in front of you and you wouldn't know until it was too late." I explain, looking them in the eyes as I speak.
"Also," I turn the page that has a picture of the structure of the virus on a molecular level, "the virus isn't actually an acid. What a virus does, is, it connects it's legs to one of the cells of the host. Then, it transfers all of it's DNA into the cell. Until eventually, the cell bursts, which spreads the virus throughout the body. Over time, the virus takes over the body completely, but the virus keeps spreading. So the body turns it into an acid, which is where the Spitters and Shadows come from."
"How do you find this stuff?!" Zoey asks, completely flabbergasted.
"What do you think I do in my free time?" I laugh. When I'm not doing anything, I'm either researching, or I'm training. I know every type of Gun inside and out, I've taken my pistols apart and put them back together more times than I can count. I swore to myself that I wouldn't stop until I found a cure. So that no little kid has to see their family die at the hands of this God-forsaken virus ever again.
"I knew you trained allot, but geez Ella, I didn't know that you trained and researched that much." Zoey laughs with me.
"As Mr. B would put it, you freaking try hard!" Tristen butts in, seeing my temporary dismay as we all laugh and finish our lunch...
