Chapter Six
Could The Mystery Deaths Be Linked?-
Recent intel leaked from the DHPD suggests that not only are the police considering that the recent homicides are connected, but they are actually acting on that theory. Our inside source, who wishes to remain anonymous, has told us that, "The station has been a buzz, nearly everyone is either on the case or wants to be on the case, it's like they know something big." One civilian's theory is that the CIA and NSA have become involved and our source was quick to confirm that it's a bigger case than just the police and everyone is getting involved. More updates on this ongoing drama later.
The rain came pouring down over Dublin Heights as Charlotte hastily ran into Caife Éan Beag to meet with Eloise Lodge, a computer genius with better skills than all JIU computer technicians combined. A constant tapping sound helped Charlotte find her as she sat quietly in the corner of a booth, hidden behind her computer. As Charlotte made her way over, Eloise stood up to hug her. "It's so good to see you," she exclaimed.
"It's been too long!" replied Charlotte.
The two sat down and began discussing Jayne's disappearance.
"So she just vanished."
"Yep, I walked away for two minutes and she was gone."
"Well, I traced her phone's recent locations, per your request. Before the party, her phone was traced to 593 Eaton Passage. She was there from 8.16pm to 8.31pm before she left to meet you."
"What's at that address?"
"I checked the satellite camera, Eaton Passage is an old, abandoned street."
"What would she be doing down there?"
"Not sure, I-" Eloise's phone began to ring before she could finish. "I'm sorry, Charlotte, I have to go but I hope you find Jayne soon." She gathered up her things and left the cafe. Charlotte soon followed and left, heading towards Jayne's parent's house.
Arriving at the Mills' house, a police car was parked outside. She ran up to the doorstep and pressed the doorbell a few times. The door opened revealing Jayne's mom, who looked like she had been crying. "Charlotte!" she said. "Come in, get out of that rain."
Charlotte stepped inside, she had been here many times before, but this time something felt different. The house was warm and smelt of cinnamon, as always, Jayne's mother led her into the living room where Jayne's brother and sister sat with the officer, who assumably owned the vehicle out front. He had a mug in his hand and quietly sipped it as Charlotte entered the room. "Charlotte! Exclaimed Anastasia, Jayne's older sister. "Any luck?" she asked.
"Unfortunately not, however, there is something I need to discuss with you."
"Of course." Anastasia stood up and motioned Charlotte to follow. They walked down the hall, into her bedroom.
"So, as you know I work for JIU, so don't be alarmed when I say, we traced her phone. Before she met me, she was down Eaton Passage and I know you were driving her."
"I assume, you want to know what she was doing. My guess is as good as yours. She told me it was work-related."
"Did she meet with anyone?"
"I don't know, she told me to park on the next road over."
"Did you see anyone else?"
"No, just a black vehicle drove past. The windows were too tinted to see inside it, but it did turn right, towards Eaton Passage."
"Well thanks, I guess."
"Sorry I can't be of more help."
Charlotte knew she needed to have a look down Eaton Passage. She dialled her sister's number, to let her know the news.
It had been a while since Harper had spoken to Ellie. The distance between them made Harper angry, she had so many questions but her sister was never around long enough to talk. The prosecutors spent countless hours building a case against Harper but no evidence was strong enough to bring Harper back to court. Harper's parents had made sure that none of their relatives found out about it, believing that such a scandal could taint their family name forever. Even though Harper knew why her parents were making such a fuss she didn't quite understand why they'd stopped talking about her sister. Ellie wasn't a common topic, but her parents always made sure to check up with her at least once a day, once every two days on a stretch. Now her parents made sure to change the subject every time Ellie's name came up making it impossible to find out if they were still in contact with her.
After a whirlwind of a night, Evangeline decided she must never see James again. She knew that they were connecting, for sure, but she didn't want a rerun of what happened with Brayden. She'd thought that had been true love but it hadn't turned out that way. It was a one-time thing, in which many glasses of Rosé were involved. She needed to turn her focus to her work which, she was drowning in. Her phone had been ringing her for hours, but the nausea she was experiencing, didn't let her leave her bed. Lying sick and sore in bed made her rethink the events of last night.
After they left the bar together, James took her to the seaside cliffs. The wind was blowing through her hair, she could smell the salt from the ocean, James was holding her hand and gently twirling her in the wind, her smile wider than ever, a moment she wished wouldn't last. When the night ended, James carried her home and stood at her doorstep. Well her's and Brayden 's doorstep, as he still had ownership of the house. He stood there holding her hands and looking deep into her eyes before sealing it with a kiss. He wished her a good night before walking into the mist of the night.
Eloise was right, Eaton Passage was old and abandoned. Charlotte had taken a trip, to Eaton Passage, accompanied by Claire and Lea. She was missing her partner in crime an as much as she liked Claire and Lea's company, they couldn't compare to the comfort she found in Jayne. Eaton Passage had been stripped of all the love it used to gain, with paint peeling down the sides and dust flocking the exposed structures. Walking down the street sent shivers down their spines.
They huddled together in the fear someone would attack them. Claire was the first to admit she was scared, "I don't like this, I think we should go."
"Not yet, we need to find out what Jayne was doing here," replied Charlotte. They continued to walk the lane of terror, huddled like penguins before a door burst open.
"Seriously Bex! She's a good kid!" The three girls ran to take cover behind a foul-smelling dumpster and saw two girls arguing in the distance. "She didn't die, did she?" yelled the shorter one.
"No, but I never asked her to starve, did I?"
"This is so stupid!" The girl stormed away, further down the passage. The other girl, now standing alone, let out a large sigh before slamming the door behind her as she went inside.
Claire, Lea and Charlotte, still huddled behind the rancid dumpster, overheard the conversation. "Are they talking about Jayne?" asked Lea.
"But didn't she say I never asked her to starve?" replied Claire."Did Jayne plan this?"
"Why would she do that?"
"Is there something she has been hiding from us?"
Stumped by the questions being asked, Charlotte ran through every possible reason Jayne would commit such an act, she soon became light-headed from the nauseous smell of the rubbish. She began to feel woozy. Eaton Passage was spinning. Then everything went black.
The twilight stole the colours of the day until the world looked like an old black and white movie. Down by the marina, blood flowed, thick and scarlet, from a slash across his head. "He deserved it," said a voice. Slowly five pairs of hands gripped onto the deceased body and launched him into the depths of the ocean.
