KOVI’S STORY

Chapter One:

I gasp when the curtain to my Tipi is thrown open. “HADI!” I screamed my peoples word for ‘no’. I scrambled to the darkest corner of the hut I lived in.

Didn't feel any warmth on my skin meaning I was safe. I looked to the door squinting at light that I loathed, to glare and curse the person that opened my door. It was my mother. “YOU KNOW I DON'T LIKE THE SUNLIGHT! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?” I yelled at her, she stepped into my hut shaking her head and chuckling.

“Oh, igin vtli, i've known since you were in my womb. The Great Spirit made you special and I must respect that. Besides, its dusk. You should get up now.” my mother came and took my deer skin blanket and began brushing the fur down.

I sighed and stood up, stretching my long limbs and cracking my back. My mother snapped the blanket at me and scolded “You really shouldn’t do that Kovi, its not healthy for your bones and we don't have the herbs to cure that.” I rolled my eyes and peeked out my door to double check it being dusk. The Elders of my tribe were around the campfire telling ancient stories of the ancient magick ways.

I walked over to them wincing at the brightness of the flame. “Greetings Kovi, please, join us. I know you have some interesting stories about the Night.” Uganowa, Whisper, tugged at my furry pants and her smile was warm against the wintery night.

I sighed, turning down an Elder was like disgracing the entire Tribe. She scooted over on the log she sat on, giving me barely enough room. As I sat I felt all eyes go on me and I immediately wanted nothing more to do than run to the safety of the darkest parts in the forest.

I cleared my throat awkwardly and thought of an interesting enough encounter i’ve had at night Ahh, yes. “Once when I was out walking about in the darkest parts of the forest, I came upon and sleeping i-na-li. She was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen.” I heard the young girls sighing, okay… “I was gazing softly at her when she began to awake from her slumber. I noticed that when she stood, she was a bit lopsided and she was limping. I took a step to see what was wrong with her but she flinched and ran to the nearest tree.” I looked down trying to remember the parts of the memory that were slightly fuzzy.

“I whispered to her that I wasn't going to hurt her, I was only trying to help. Thanks to the Great Spirit she actually believed me, I think.” I chuckled and so did everyone else in the campfire. I didn't even find it that funny but, whatever.

So from then I told my story about how I prayed to darkness that it would heal her injury. I don't know if it did or not but I can still hope. When I was done with my story I stood and everyone began softly clapping. I smiled and winked at a young lady in the group.

Most of the young ladies here swoon over me but its a rare chance of them actually seeing me, since I normally don't see them. I began walking towards the forest when I heard footsteps trailing behind me.

I am strongest in the Dark and somehow my senses are spiked. It was the young lady I winked at. I smiled to myself and decided she could follow me.
