Chapter Two:

I made my way through the rough forest, I could see easily at night so it wasn't ever a problem to me, but that woman following me, she had a rough time.

I tried to go in parts with less thorns in them and more grass but it all had thorns. I kept moving though, trying to get to my favorite part in the whole forest. The Oak Tree of Grace.

It was the largest tree in the entire forest, its branches swaying out to the size of two oaks. The top of the tree stretches through the top of the trees like  a goddess. In my Cherokee culture we don't worship male gods. We believe that women are powerful and are very wise.

I walked a few more tree spaces and then the forest opened up to reveal the Oak. I smiled at it and turned to see the girl picking a thorn out of her moccasins. I knew she couldn’t see me, her eyes aren’t adapted to the dark like mine.

I sighed lowly, enough for her to know I wasn't looking at her but so that she knew I was still there. Her head snapped up and she looked around frantically. I chuckled and her breathing increased.

“Why did you follow me?” I ask curiously. She took in another breath, this time slow, and put her hand to her breast. “Oh, you frightened me,” she took a deep breath and slowly let it out, her heartbeat slowing with it, “I wanted to see where you went every night. I thought you wouldn't mind, but its so dark out here I can't see anything.”

I smiled as she looked around trying to spot my voice so she knew where I was. It was almost midnight by now, and I didn't plan on leaving so soon. Its normally a 2 hour walk so I normally leave around 4am.

“I’m over here,” I chuckle. She turns her head in my direction. I walk slowly over to her and put my hands on her shoulders. “Right here.” I whisper. “H-how can you see?” she stutters, she was nervous. “I am well adapted to night. Considering it is my day.” I say. She nods and her lips part.

“What is your name?” I ask. “L-no-li.” She looked up at me and I could see that her eyes were extremely dilated. Black Fox. I thought to myself, what a pretty name. “That a beautiful name,” she blushed.

I smiled that I got a reaction out of her. “Thank you Kovi. Now could you please tell me where we are?” She asked, I guess she had a sudden confidence boost. She stopped stuttering.

“We are at the Oak Tree. We’re in the middle of the forest, the darkest part.” I said. “Oh, well are you sure nothing is going to get us? I’m never out here past dark, I fret that the beasts will get me.” She seemed wary of me now.

“Yes, I am sure. L-no-li, there is nothing to fear here. I can see clear as day out here. I am well adapted to darkness’s cold shadowy presence.” She seemed reassured at my words. But then there was this loud crack invading the still silence.

I felt her tense up. I looked around and saw a giant horn type thing glint in the moonlight. It was about seventeen feet in the air. The Oak blocked the rest of it, only the horn being visible.

I turned to Black Fox and saw that she was looking exactly where I was. She opened her mouth to scream but I covered it quickly. “Do not speak. Do not move. When I say jump you jump onto me and we will leave.” She nodded with my hand on her mouth.

I could feel the vibrations of her shaking fear. I stepped back from her but she quickly latched onto me. “No. I need room for you to jump.” I whispered, barely audible against the u-no-le picking up.

Black Fox hesitantly let go of me and backed away a few feet. I heard a heavy sighing sound and I leaped forward to pick up L-no-li. Screw the plan.

She squealed as my arms wrapped around her bridal style. ‘Silence her peacefully please. we can’t risk any noise.’ I prayed to Darkness. Strangely Darkness answered my request, she went silent.

I looked back once before taking a step and the froze. I just looked into the scarlet of a shadow horse. That wasn't a horn that was a shadow apparition. I knew he saw me so I bolted from my spot.

“KOVI!” I heard a neigh. The horse was talking to me, I’m done. I picked up my space and sped through the forest, a silent girl in my arms. “KOVI!” the horse beckoned. I felt a pull at my soul, I was not giving in to the beast. “NO! I WILL NOT GIVE IN!” I pushed against the shadow horse and kept up my pace.

Thats when I heard hooves thumping against the leaf bed. Tree branches breaking behind me. Then I felt it. Its cold damp breath breathing on the back on my neck, making goosebumps form on my olive flesh. “You are going to drop her, let her go. You and I need to talk.” The horse reeked of death and Darkness. I wasn’t planning on dying today but I knew I couldn’t resists Darkness personified.

I put down Black Fox and looked into her fear filled eyes. “Go. You are safe, he won’t hurt you.” I said in honesty, I could tell that the beast meant no harm. “You can talk it it?” she asked, eyes wide. “You can't?” “No! Get away from me!” she backed away and ran through more of the forest. I sighed and shook my head.

I turned slowly to the beast, not showing any fear. His scarlet eyes seemed to have dimmed and he was breathing heavily. “Okay. She is gone. Now what?” I questioned. I felt strangely drawn the the beast, somewhere deep down, I knew that he was a good person.
