✷ ✷ ✷ The next morning, Daphne woke up next to a half empty pizza box and a sprinkling of candy wrappers on her down comforter. She turned over, finding herself face to face with Velma who surprisingly still had her glasses on. She sat up, finding Shaggy and Fred on her air mattress, and finally, Scooby passed out on her window seat with a bone between his paws.

The dog soon woke up, trotting over to her side of the bed, nudging her to get up to take him out, not believing his owner would be up anytime soon. Groggily, Daphne got up and threw on the closest pair of leggings and a baggy NYU sweatshirt, tucking her phone into the front pocket. Scooby was practically crying by the time she put her hair up and put on her rain boots.

"Scoob, go get me your leash, we can go out!" The Great Dane bolted back to where he had slept that night, bringing her back the teal leash. She clipped him up and they went out, walking down the street towards the forest ahead.

This was something she ended up doing a lot, in fact, the whole gang at some point had a turn taking care of the lovable dog. The redhead had really taken to the long walks Scooby liked, giving her an opportunity to unwind and unplug from her own thoughts.

Then Scooby took off sprinting.

"Scooby, what the hell! I can't keep up with you, bud!" She yelled, following him deeper into the tall oak trees. The trail was far behind them, but Scooby kept pressing forward until he found what looked like the carcass of a dead goat. "Dude, that's gross, don't touch i-"

Then she looked up.

Then she saw pools of blood.

Then she saw a stone altar propped in the middle of it all, staring menacingly into her soul.

"God Almighty."

"And this was just all in the middle of the forest?" Fred asked, blowing up the images Daphne had taken at the site on his Mac monitor.

"Yeah, asshole, it wasn't in the middle of town square for all to see." She snapped, shakily bringing the cup of tea she had to her lips.

"This is bigger than anything we've ever come across, you guys, this is some occult business." Shaggy said, currently placed on the couch with a map of Greendale, trying to pinpoint an exact coordinate.

"Guys...this isn't the first time Greendale has seen witches." Velma said quietly, currently going through the library's online records. She was staring at a scanned piece of parchment, it seemed to be a record of a death with one name...followed by twelve more. The group gathered around the screen, trying to understand what they were reading. "There were witch trials here...here in Greendale."

Daphne felt her stomach drop, quickly writing a post-it note out with the information and putting it onto their case web board. "You're telling me it wasn't just any kind of sacrifice I saw, not pagans or weirdos, or whatever-"

"I'm not saying anything for sure, I'm allegedly saying that this could be-" Velma swallows quickly. "Witches...Witches in Greendale."

The group sat in a stale, cold silence. They accidentally stumbled into a case that may be the end of them solving cases...ever again. Should they just forget that it happened? Stick to following leads about teachers in Riverdale helping run an underground Jingle-Jangle operation or how certain books from the library seemed to keep being pulled by administration. This was completely a moral issue, an issue of security, how much were these so-called 'witches' influencing the town?

Fred finally stood up, rubbing his face with his left hand and facing the board. "I think we should follow this...as long as it stays safe. The moment it gets too dangerous, we back out and pretend nothing ever happened."

"Fred, love the bravado of being the strong leader and whatnot," Shaggy starts, biting into a hot pocket he had just pulled out of the microwave. "But, are you sure that this isn't messed up already? They were fully cutting up goats in the forest, is that not wack enough for you?"

"Isn't that what we said about the cafeteria funds? But you convinced us to keep going because you wanted Tater Tot Tuesday's back." Fred replied, crossing his arms.

"That was cafeteria food, something that keeps us fed and healthy. This is witches in the woods probably hiding from rain so they don't melt!"

"Melting only happens in the Wizard of Oz." The chocolate skinned athlete replied, obviously becoming annoyed. "If this continues, maybe the town won't be 'healthy', did you ever think about that, Shag?"

"Fred is right." Daphne piped in, slowly raising her eyes to meet the groups. "They could be swaying the whole town in decisions, maybe they're causing all that crap that's happening in Riverdale with the Gang and the prison-"

"The prison is all Hiram Lodge's fault, but continue." Velma chimes in, wrinkling her nose in disgust.

"We could completely be under some kind of guise, some curtain shielding us to whats actually happening!" Daphne exclaims. "How many more of us have to go into those woods to find stuff like that? How many more times are we going to turn a blind eye to stuff that is obviously affecting our community?"

The group fell silent again, Shaggy finally nodding along in agreement. Velma rubs his back comfortingly by his side.

"I'm all for it, there is something not too groovy about this whole situation." Velma says, straightening up. "Don't take it to the paper just yet, stick to pieces on the swim team and clubs."

"Don't take it to the paper at all, this is way too big for the high school paper." Daphne says, rolling her eyes. "Time to figure out what happened to those thirteen women and if the supernatural has gone Suburban."

They all get to work, digging through all the information they could get online. Daphne shakes her head as she gets more and more confused, which would be a trend for the next few weeks. "Jinkies!
