The next morning I wake in Beth's bed encased in the warmth of my blanket. I blink the sleep from eyes, realizing the other girls are already gone. I stretch with a groan, then slip out of bed before getting ready for the day. I hurry outside to find the others, grabbing an apple out of the basket someone left on the porch as I walk down the steps. Butterflies erupt in my stomach as I see Daryl sitting on a log sharping one of his knives from across the yard. I cant help but smile.
"Hey." I say casually, leaning my back against the tree beside his tent. One hand wraped around my waist, the other holding the apple. He looks up from the knife, a small smirk creeping onto his face.
"Hey." He replies.
"Has Shane said anything you?" I ask curiously as i take a bite of my apple. I want to make sure my brother hadn't started anymore trouble while i was asleep. Thankfully he shakes his head.
"Nah, he hasn't said much to anyone."
"Good." I reply with a nod.
"I take watch at the barn soon...wanna join?" He asks quitely. If i didnt know any better i'd think he was being shy. I smile as i eat.
"Well, I suppose." I fake a deep sigh, shrugging my shoulders, pretending as if i could care less. He looks back down continuing to sharpen his knife, seeming a little disappointed by my reaction. I giggle, tossing the pit if my apple before walking closer to him. I playfully nudge his arm with my free hand. "Come on Dixon cheer up, I'm teasing," i laugh. He scoffs, rolling his eyes at me.
"You know...your lucky your cute." He says with a smirk as he looks back up at me.
"Oh yeah?" I ask with a laugh. He places his knife on the ground.
"Yeah." He replies as he grabs my waist, pulling me closer so that im standing between his legs. My stomach does a flip, the feeling of his hands resting against my hips sending waves of electricity through my body. The log he's sitting on is just tall enough that he hardly has to look up at me. I smile, laughing at him as I run my hands over his arms. The confident smirk on his face making me melt. He lifts his chin, leaning close. Our lips are mere inches apart. God I cant even begin explain how badly I want the space between us to dissapear. My whole body aches to be closer to him, but as I go to move my face closer he pulls away.
"Well, Time to take watch" he says with a shrug. I frown a little. "Come on Hailey, cheer up, I'm teasing." He says mimicking me. I giggle, shoving him a little.
"Asshole" I joke. He laughs, pulling me close by my waist again. The tip of his nose skims against the side of mine as he leans in for real this time. I rest my hands against his cheeks as we kiss, a sweet gentle kiss. He stays close when we pull away. He tries to hold back a smile like the big tough guy he is, but its not working which makes me smile like an idiot. He lifts one of his hands from my waist, tucking a fallen strand of hair from my face.
"It really is time tho." He says quietly, as he gazes admiringly at all the features of my face.
"Well lets go then." I respond with a laugh as i take his hands in mine, pulling him to his feet. He drops one of my hands grabbing his crossbow off the ground, but keeps a hold of the other, keep it folding his finger in between mind as we head toward the barn. Our hands fit together like the worlds most perfect puzzle. I stop dead in my tracks too shocked too move when I see my Uncle Rick guiding a walker toward the barn where we're headed. The only thing keeping it from sinking its decaying teeth into him is a metal pole that would have been used to control a stray dog before all of the this. Hershel walks beside him guiding another, smaller, walker toward the barn.
"Rick!" I scream, my blood turning to ice as Hershel struggles to maintain control of the flailing corpse at the end of his pole. It jerks towards Rick, swinging so close that it almost grabs him. Everyone hearing the commotion and runs to the barn, meeting Hershel and Rick at the double doors when they see what's happening.
