A few weeks passed before Kiba's mom approached him in the female's den.

Son, Fawn is a good playmate, but the caregivers are worried that you won't have good social skills unless you have a male friend. So, unless you make a friend who is male, you won't be allowed to play with Fawn.

Kiba was astonished. But that isn't fair! Why can't males and females all be friends? He pouted.

You know the rules, his Motherwolf said sternly. There are many nice males in this pack. You will make one.

Kiba huffed, but walked out of the rocky den. He ran off to the meadow to meet Fawn.

Fawn! He cried. You'll never guess what my motherwolf said to me. He says sadly. Fawn cocked her head.

I have to make a new male friend or else I won't be allowed to play with you any more! Kiba says, sighing. Fawn gasped, shocked.

But  all the males are terribly rude. How will we find a male who is willing to be our friend? Fawn asks sadly.

I don't know. Kiba admits, looking away.

All was silent. Both pups were wondering how in the world they were going to figure this out. Until, Kiba speaks up.

Hey, what if we held, um, auditions? Kiba asks, full of hope.

Fawn looks up. Is that a good idea

Of course! What, is there a better way..? Kiba snorts. Fawn sighs again.

No, I guess not...

Great! Let's go down to the River and hold those auditions, Kiba bounds out of the meadow, Fawn close behind, as they make their way to the River.

The River is the most popular hangout spot for all pups born that spring. It was a hilly landscape, with clear water and a large Willow tree for shade in the May heat.

As they reach the hangout, most of the males were splashing in the water, cheering and laughing. The females lay in the Willow tree, talking and giggling.

Fawn and Kiba stood at the top of the grassy hill. Want me to do the talking? Kiba whispered, knowing Fawn's shyness. Fawn nodded, of course.

Kiba cleared his throat. Hey! He yells, and all activity stops to look at him. My best friend Fawn and I need a male playmate. Auditions will be held behind the Willow tree starting now!

Fawn and Kiba run behind the tree, smiling. Until they heard laughs.

That's so dumb! a male yells, and everyone laughs louder. Kiba and Fawn frown, discouraged.

Maybe it wasn't a good idea. Let's just go back to the meadow. Kiba sulks, Fawn following him.

Wait! a male voice shouts. A pup with light caramel fur and rare, dull green eyes trots up next to them. Do you need a male playmate? I'd be happy to apply!
