It was finally the weekend. I had learned a few important rules of the world behind the curtain and learned a few magic spells.

I was now being forced into a dress. Stephanie was zipping up the back. It was a long red silk dress. It has two straps that crossed in the back and was low cut in the front. She handed me a pair of white gloves and shoes to go with it.

“And I’ll do your hair! Derek won’t be able to keep his hands off you!”

“Derek is not interested in me like that! It’s Max’s idea that I am even going!”

“Derek wants you…just give in! I wonder if you are his mate…that would break a million hearts!”

“What are you talking about?” She ran a brush through my hair and began pulling it up in a messy bun. “Werewolves have mates. They are kind of like penguins. If they find the one they are meant to be with….it’s like a signal going off in their head. Vampires are the same…My mate is Max…when I told him he was sitting under a tree alone. Derek had detention…I walked up to him…he looked at me and smiled. He said…cool, a vampire…” she said with a small smile. The look in her eyes said she was in love. “And I said, yes…I am a vampire…and you are my mate…just thought you should know. And I turned away and was about to walk away but he grabbed my hand and pulled me to him and smirked. He said that he already knew. He had been watching me as much as I watched him. He said he felt me as I had felt him….Do you feel Derek? He stares at you when you don’t look…and you seem to not care…Maybe you aren’t his mate…but he is sure interested in you…”

I looked up at her through the mirror. She had finished with my hair, letting random strands hang on the side of my face. She then proceeded to pull my face to her and held up eyeliner. “I don’t know…I guess I like him…I don’t know a lot about him. I don’t know if it’s a connection I feel but…I know we can be great friends.”

“I think you can be more…” she said. I rolled my eyes. She finished doing my makeup and I looked in the mirror. I looked really good. I grinned and looked at her. She had finished an hour before I had gotten to her room.

“Let’s go! I am sure the guys are waiting.”

I nodded and followed her out of the room. Sure enough, the guys were waiting at the end of the hall. Derek was dressed in a black tux. It looked comfortable, not tight or new like most tuxes. He wasn’t wearing a tie like Max was. He had the first few buttons undone. His hair wasn’t any different. It was still kind of shaggy. He turned and looked at me. I smiled a little to him.

Max embraced Stephanie and kissed her lips. I glanced at them. Derek held out his arm and I slowly took it. He grinned and we went into the ball room.

The music was loud and inviting. Derek looked around. “I have never been to one of these…”

“Me either…” I muttered.

He smirked and looked down at me. He was about a foot taller than I was. I felt eyes burning into my back and I turned. A girl was staring at me. A look of pure hate was on her face. I looked up at Derek and motioned over his shoulder. “Who is that?”

He glanced over and looked at the girl. “I’m not sure but she sure is glaring hard enough…”

The girl turned away and I shrugged her off as one of the hearts that was going to be broken. “Wanna dance?” he asked. I blushed.

“I don’t know how…”

“Good, we can sit and talk…dance at slow songs because I know those….”

I grinned and he pulled out a seat for me. I sat down. Max and Steph had began dancing like sex crazed people on the dance floor. I smirked and turned to Derek. He was staring at me.
