Adrien Agreste was standing in front of his full length mirror, finishing off his midnight-black tuxedo by adjusting the cuff links.
It was nearly sun down, the wedding starting in a few minutes. His cue to start down towards the beach. As he searched his jacket pockets for Lila's letter, he pulled it out a last time.
He traced his fingertips along the delicately cursive handwriting, past the worn edges and signature at the bottom. It was significantly cleaner than the rest of the print.
It looked new.
He narrowed in on the stray pencil marks, to where a shape resembled what looked to be an M. And then a D. And finally, a C. He must have been seeing things, perhaps due to the celebratory drinks he and Nino shared earlier that afternoon.
MDC?
His heart pounded. Resembling a trembling drum in his chest as the revelation sunk in.
It wasn't Lila who wrote the letter.
It was Marinette. When Nino knocked on his door to tell him it was time to leave, Adrien practically bolted to the door and opened it in a frantic haze.
"Marinette." Adrien gasped.
"What?"
"Marinette. It's always been Marinette."
High school began thundering through at the speed of light, memory after memory where the blue-haired girl always appeared with a nervous grin and vibrant blush on her cheeks.
Memories filled with toasty pastries and spilled flour, brilliant laughter with aching ribs, dancing snowflakes and pelted snowballs, the bright smiles and brief hand touches, shared homework and colorful paint strokes.
She was always there for him.
Nino shook Adrien by the shoulders. "It only took you five years!"
"You knew?"
"Of course! I knew and Alya too. Marinette knew but she saw the way you and Lila looked at each other. How perfect you two looked in the glossy pages of magazines. She thought she wasn't good enough for you." Nino explained, the adrenaline running through Adrien too fast he thought he might faint.
"I don't think I can do this wedding." Adrien messed up his styled hair by anxiously running his hands through it.
"Well I'd think not." Nino agreed.
"I have to go find Marinette and tell her." Adrien tucked the letter back into his pocket. "She must be on the beach already."
"Go get her Prince Charming." Nino shoved him out the door. "I'll try to get Alya to distract Lila."
Adrien ran down the stairway, wasting no time to get towards Marinette. He could already imagine her beautiful blue gaze from here.
Zipping past crowds of guests and hotel staff, he went past the pool area and out the surrounding gate. His feet hit the sand and knew she was near.
"Marinette!" he called out.
She turned around, cheeks blooming bright when she saw him. In her red dress and hair pinned back, he felt weak in the knees.
