Sam's P.O.V.- Aged 8
"Darcy let's play!" Me and my sister Darcy were playing outside by our little tree house when I started to get real bored. I decided to keep begging Darcy to pay attention to me until she agreed to play. However, I guess I got on her nerves a little to much because she just continued to ignore me.
"I said no you little dweeb" Darcy groaned.
"Why not!" I cried
"Because I am to old to play silly games, unless those games involve money." Darcy huffed and walked away.
Darcy was 3 years older than me and was starting to go through those awkward teen years. She hardly ever played with me anymore. Plus my parents would not let me leave the house without strict permission, so I had a limited array of friends at the time.
After my 8th birthday I started to notice changes within me.
I was so confused as to what those changes were and I felt as if I had no one to turn to. Darcy was at school all day, while mom home-schooled me. Every time I tried to talk to mom about my problems she would just pass them off as me getting older.
I still remember when I discovered my powers. I was at home watching an episode of Sponge Bob when my mom burst into the house and pushed me into my room. It was frightening and I had never seen her like this before. She usually didn't have a panic attack unless her and dad got into a fight.
Darcy was away at some sleepover and not there to comfort me like she usually does when mom and dad fight like this.
Smack! (I remember the sound of flesh hitting flesh and knew my mother was in trouble, so slowly I approached the door)
My dad has never been a prominent figure in my life. He would always come home late at night and you could clearly smell the booze coming off his suit. He never told us where he worked or even what he did but clearly he had time to hit the bar. When things got real bad, him and mom would start screaming at each other but never once has it gone past that. My mother says that i'm very smart for my age and maybe that's why I can remember things as clearly as I do, sometimes it gets to the point where it gives me a headache if I think about it too long.
(As I opened the door, I tried to sneak over to my mom but she instantly tried to push me back into my room but it was too late.)
"What are you doing here! Maria I thought I told you to get that bastard child out of this house! I don't work so DAMN HARD FOR YOU TO HAVE ILLEGITIMATE KIDS! SO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET THIS LITTLE SHIT OUT OF HERE!" My dad roared.
My dads outburst brought tears to my eyes. I did not understand why he was yelling at me for not being his child. Of course I was his child. I looked at my mother who refused to look at me. I ran up to her and asked her whats going on but she quickly picked me up and carried me to my room and laid me on the bed. I sat there patiently waiting for her to explain what was happening but no explanation ever came.
After about 15 minutes my mom had packed all my things into a small suitcase and grabbed my hand and started dragging me out the door.
"Good riddance, you stupid free loader" is all I remember my da-... I guess I can't call him that anymore. Well then that's all I remember this man saying before I was shoved into the backseat of a taxi.
My Mom sat quietly beside me as we drove down main street. Mom would sometimes take me down these roads and we would turn the radio all the way up and belt our hearts out to whatever came on the radio. I don't know where I'm going but I know I'll probably not see my mom and Darcy for a very long time.
I grabbed my moms hand and she turned and looked at me with puffy eyes. Content with this, we both sat there and awaited the destination.
When we arrived at the facility it looked very worn down but cozy on the inside. My mom got my suitcase and grabbed my hand to walk me into the building. Once inside my mom excused herself by saying she needed to go talk to one of the supervisors. As I waited I took in the scenery and could tell that this place was nicely decorated. There was a painting in every corner of the room and a plant every where you turned. It felt very lively and that sorta helped calm my nerves.
Sooner than later my mom returned with this weird looking lady who looked like she could lift an entire car if she tried. I locked eyes with my mother and knew this was it. She was leaving me. She got down on her knees so she could look me in the eyes.
"I love you so much! Always remember that. I know that you will do extraordinary things and I only wish that I could be there to see it." She wept hard onto my shoulder as she gave me one last hug. With that she wiped her eyes and walked out the door but before anyone could stop me, I ran after her and hugged her like my life depended on it.
"DON'T LEAVE ME MOMMY. I LOVE YOU!" I cried hard in her arms and she to was once again crying. After a minute she calmed me down by rocking me back and forth like she did whenever I would get scared. She lifted my chin and dried my tears and walked me back into the building.
"Be Strong little one." she whispered and left. I was utterly heartbroken. I had no idea where I was or what to do. Before I could ask a question, the mean looking old lady grabbed me by the collar and took me to my room and told me I would be placed into care shortly.
After she left, I sat there feeling so angry, so confused, and most importantly alone. No sister running to the kitchen for a snack nor the sound of mom watching her late night shows. I didn't even know where the bathroom was here. All that was in this room that was familiar was this tiny wooden bookshelf in the corner. I decided to make my way over there to help pass the time or at least make me sleepy because I'm to numb to fall asleep yet.
As I was reading I noticed that there was a picture of a family playing in the park and it reminded me of the time mom took Darcy and I to Finch park to feed the little ducklings. Darcy was upset that all the ducks were taking my bread instead of hers so she pushed me into the little lake in the park. However, while she was laughing our mom decided the best way to punish her was to push her in as well, with her jumping in shortly after. After our hysterical laughter died down she took us to JJ's Sandwich shop which had the best Brisket in town. That was a fun day and one of the many adventure's mom took us on. That was last spring and now who's going to take me to feed the ducks. Slowly, I was finally realizing that I truly never would see them again.
The room started to get heavy all of the sudden. I was upset that my mom just left me but I was more sad that I would never see my family again. No more visits up to Grandma and Grandpa's ranch, no late night movie marathons, and most importantly no more them in general. I'm alone and if my own family abandoned me, who would want me.
In my hysteria I failed to realize that all the objects in the room were levitating. As soon as I noticed the objects in the room were moving, I went to touch the floating book I had been reading. It disintegrated before I could even get near it and before I could try to grab anything else the rest of the objects came down in a crashing halt.
"What's going on in there!" The old lady asked from outside. Quickly, I ran over to my bed and I pretended to be asleep. Once I heard her walk down the hallway, I got back up and walked back over to where the book had been and found nothing.
All I could think of was that this is strange. Was this the reason my my mother sent me away? What are these powers? Was I just imagining it? How could I imagine it the book is clearly gone. My thought keep going back to one of my homework assignments my mom made me read. The article was about mutants. Mutants are feared everywhere, am I really a mutant. Is that why mom did't want me to leave the house? Did she already know?
I went to bed that night with so many questions that were going to go unanswered. One thing I knew for sure was that my life was going to get a whole lot more complicated.
