"C'mon! Faster! Go!" Austin yelled while slamming the keys as he kept his eyes glued on the television screen.
The commotion caused Sidney to spring up to consciousness. She shielded her eyes as the light seeped in from the cheap curtains hanging in Austin's dorm room. She glanced around and saw not much had changed. It gave her a sense of comfort to see that things stayed the same. His cinderblock walls still had paint chips, his LA Dodgers poster was still a little uneven with the bottom left corner flying away from its tape, the only thing that was different was the collage of photos beside his desk had a few empty spaces, where she used to be. She felt a slight pain in her heart as she noticed it, but not as much as she thought it would.
"Serious!!" He yelled into his headset causing Sidney to groan. Truth be told she doesn't remember a lot of last night, like how she got to his dorm, she thought she was content with Austin, this was what she wanted but in the back of her mind, she couldn't erase the memory of Harry's laugh and his silly texts and his dumb accent.
Austin glanced back at her after realizing she was awake but quickly spun his head back to the game. "Good morning" She slid her legs out of the comforter and saw found herself wearing one of Austin's tee shirts "What happened last night?"
"Not much" He shrugged still not facing her. Something set her off, usually, he was cheerful and happy when he saw her. She understood circumstances were different this time but this isn't what Sidney expected.
"Uh okay, do you want me to get breakfast or something"
Again, he brought his shoulders up to his ears and let them fall a bit more dramatically this time. She looked around the room and found the pictures that were missing sitting on his desk with tape still on the edges, they were sitting on top of his laptop. This instantly set something off in her, he uses his laptop every day. She got up and walked towards his desk and picked up the photos, she felt his eyes follow her to the desk. "When did you take these down?"
"This morning" His voice was soft and almost gentle, something she hadn't gotten from him in a long time.
What Sidney didn't know is Austin had been struggling with himself for longer than she had known. He appreciated Sid and had no reason to not love her, but they grew apart and before he knew it he stopped feeling the love he felt before. It hurt him more than he could explain, he knew it was easy for Sid to hate him and be bitter, but he also knew that telling her was the best thing he could have done. It wasn't until last night, maybe it was her smile or the one strand of her dark hair that fell right beside her eye, or maybe it was her eccentric personality that made her the life of the party. It could have been anything, but it made him feel something again. Austin leaned forward and pressed the button on his tv, shutting it off and lowering the headset from his ears to around his neck. "I'm sorry for everything that's happened" She stood there with confusion in her eyes, she was taken aback by his sudden confession. "I didn't just want you for sex last night, I really have been missing you"Her cheeks became a rosy pink color and she smiled widely "Okay well then it's good we are here now, I missed you too" She put her arms around his neck and watched his face fall as he became overwhelmed with discomfort. She knew then something was up.
"Who's Harry?" He looked down, not daring to make eye contact with her. She was instantly confused and put into a sort of panic mode.
"What, how do you-" She fumbled on her words as she played with the hem on the bottom of his black graphic tee shirt.
"He texted you this morning, I was just responding because it was going off"
"Oh, well he's just a friend"
He sighed and ran his hand through his hair and let it rest awkwardly behind his neck."Please be honest with me, I felt something when I saw you again, I felt that love we used to have. but then"
"Then what?" She blurted out before he could even finish the word, with a sense of anger and resentment in her voice. She had no idea where this had come from but it felt like he was bringing her up only to push her down.
"You said his name"
"What?"
"You said his name" Austin snapped, rising from his chair quickly suddenly acting on the defense.
"What are you talk-"
"In bed" He sighed, "You said his name"
"I- Uh I don't know what to say" Words couldn't explain how Sidney felt in this moment. Sure she loved Austin they had been together for so long. But she would be lying to herself if she said a part of her wasn't connected to Harry.
She looked down and felt his hand glide up her neck and below her chin, she raised her face to look at him.
"We had great times, I really did love you" He sighed and shook his head "but we both can't do this anymore"
Ultimately she knew this was what had to be done, they could never go back to the way they were. It still hurt though, for both of them.
"I know that" She admitted and grabbed his hand "Friends?" a slight smile showed on his face causing his dimples to peek through
"of course, I am gonna need someone to beat in Smash bros" She chuckled and punched his shoulder playfully.
"Hey! I won last time!"
"Yeah because you spam down B" he said under his breath
"What was that?"
"Oh, nothing!" He said as he tossed her a pair of sweatpants "C'mon lets play some more"
