"You see the first thing we love is a scene. For love at first sight requires the very sign of its suddenness; and of all things, it is the scene which seems to be seen best for the first time" - Roland Barthes

"get him in here quick" their voices filled throughout the corridor of the emergency entrance.

"his breathing seems weak, sir can you tell me what happened to him again?" the man's voice thundered over the other hospital personnel.

"we were at the river going for a swim..." the man's words faded out as I watched them wheel the gurney by.

The boy's face looked pale and it held a grim expression. His brown hair was plastered to his forehead and his blue t-shirt was clinging to his body. I watched closely as they rolled the boy further down the hallway.

Suddenly without so much as a warning a pain hits me. I held my side at first, trying to ignore it, hoping for it to leave me shortly. I began to feel lightheaded as the pain grows stronger, holding my side I then reach for the wall to support me.
"hey" Emma stumbled in front of me as I grasped the wall, "are you okay?" she asked, concern written on her face.

I mindlessly nodded my head through the pain. My legs began to give out beneath me and I slipped down the wall to the cold floor.

"do you want me to get a nurse?" my sister asked.

I waved my hand at her brushing her off. Emma then stood to her feet and disappeared somewhere down the hallway. I sat there in pain as my eyelids began to shut. Giving in I closed my eyes as the sound of hurried feet running along the tile floors got closer.

I opened my tired eyes to an all too familiar scene. I slowly pulled the IV out of my hand and sat up causing the small room to slowly spin. Emma walked in the room as I leaned back into my pillows. I forced a smile onto my face.

"the doctors said that was one of your worse episodes that they have seen lately. they even measured the pain of this attack this time. they said the pain levels were very high, almost as high a breaking a few bones." Emma spoke in an authoritative manner.

I shut my eyes remembering the sensation I felt in my ribs earlier.

"they also said for you to rest today." Emma spoke crossing her arms over her chest.

"I'm don't want to rest" I responded.

"I'm tired of always having to rest because of these stupid pains.

" I sat up swinging legs over the bed preparing to stand up, "anyways I'm fine, don't worry."

Emma stared at me unhappy with my decision.

"Why are we back on the first floor?" Emma asked as she walked beside me down the brightly light hallway.

"I just wanted to check on something, that's all." I replied giving an indirect answer.

"It's that boy isn't it?" she asked, "you want to make sure he is okay?"

I kept walking ignoring her obviously correct accusation. I couldn't deny that I was down here hoping to see the boy to make sure that he is okay.

"hey, come on, I'm sure he is okay, at this rate he should be the one checking on you. You should probably just go back to your room and sit down before you get caught. the doctors said for you to rest. plus you just woke up from passing out, don't you think you should at least take it easy?" Emma kept at me as we got closer to the room they rolled the boy into.

"if you don't be quiet we'll both be caught." I tell Emma in an attempt to quiet her.

Reaching the boys room I look in the small window on the door to see him lying there on the bed, his eyes closed. I looked around the small room and saw a man sitting in the chair by the wall. Stepping back I look for the files that should be outside his room door. I pull the clipboard up off of the wall and I begin to scan down the papers picking up bits of information as I go.

"Lucas...183cm."

I flip to the next page where the incident information report is located. I read the diagnosis and place the clipboard back where it was hanging.

"so are you happy?" Emma asked clearly annoyed.

"He has 2 broken ribs." I replied sadden that he broke 2 bones but also happy that it's not anymore serious than that.

"Okay then, let's go back now before we get caught," Emma said pulling at my hand.

I sighed as I let her drag me back down the hospitals dreary corridors.
