Leonard let the last sip of the third glass of whiskey he had that night burn down his throat, hoping the firey burn would distract him from the suffocating pain he felt in his chest. To be honest, he didn't even want to be in the club that night. Jim had convinced him it would lighten his spirits, to get drunk and forget it all, but the last thing Leonard wanted to do was get wasted and find himself with another woman in the morning.
No, Leonard McCoy did not have one night stands.
Especially when he was thinking about you.
Somehow the pain of breaking it off with you hurt worse than when he and Jocelyn divorced. The emotional attachment to you was just too strong for him to bear.
Once he spotted Jim in the corner of the smoky room, drunkenly making out with a naive ensign, he grumbled and started to pull money from his small wallet. Until he spotted you across the dance floor.
He shook his head, thinking he was seeing things, but you were still there, in a [favorite color] dress, hair framing your face like a damn picture. His heart lurched forward as if pulling him towards you, but he knew better. He broke your heart and you didn't want anything to do with him. Or so he thought.
He slapped a twenty on the cold granite, barely hearing the bartender thank him, before rushing out of the overcrowded club. After not seeing you for three weeks, one glance was all it took for the raw crack in his old heart to rip itself apart again. He suddenly couldn't stop the tidal wave of bittersweet memories and feelings drowning him in such a short amount of time. He managed to get himself back to the hotel he and Jim were saying at without a tear escaping, but the second the door closed, he leaned back against it and slid down to the floor. He rubbed at his eyes with the heels of his hands, choking on the lump slowly climbing up his throat.
Feelings and images flooded his subconscious; you and him having drinks in his office after long Medbay hours, you and him watching old 21st-century romantic comedies when you were supposed to be filing reports, you and him finally moving in together on the ship. You and him.
Us.
He had to break it off in the end. He couldn't let things get too deep for him and then have you realize that he was too old and broken for someone as young and beautiful as you. He couldn't let you break his heart. Instead, he broke it himself. It had seemed easier that way. What he hadn't realized was that now, he not only carried the weight of his own shattered way of life but yours as well. The pain, anger, and confusion in your eyes as he said those words haunted his every waking moment and he wasn't sure if he could cope much longer.
~~~
You had come to the club to run away from your nightmares, and, hopefully, get drunk. You just wanted a fun night with your girls and try to forget about Leonard. He had plagued your dreams for days, and you just needed him out of your head. Or back in. You couldn't decide.
The second you entered the smokey room, you ordered a bourbon. Downing the whole thing instantly, you threw yourself into the throng of dancing people and aliens. After a few minutes, one of your friends disappeared. You turned towards the bar and your heart lept into your throat.
Leonard was slouched in a barstool, flipping through his tattered old wallet before paying and leaving. Someone bumped into you, sending their drink all over your dress. He mumbled a slurred apology, but you waved him off. You moved towards the door, too sober to stay and get drunk.
You never really realized how fragile you were after he broke up with you. Just one glance had sent you spiraling and you didn't know if you could ever recover. Heels clicking, you exited the bar and started walking towards your hotel. After your breakup with Leonard, you had asked the captain to be reassigned. As head nurse on the Enterprise, you spent a lot of time with the Cheif Medical Officer, who just-so-happened to be Leonard. You wouldn't be able to work with him after he dumped you. The captain begrudgingly agreed, although upset at both you and Bones for not being able to get over it and act like adults. He sent the request to Starfleet and before you knew it, you were boarding the U.S.S Bradbury. You were promoted to CMO after the original one retired a few days after you had begun serving.
You shook your head, loosening the grip your memories had on your mind. You tried to focus on something else, anything else, but every loose end you gripped onto led back to Leonard. You reluctantly succumbed, allowing the melancholy images to slowly flood your mind's eye.
Visuals of you and him playing cards in his office, you and him cuddling on the viewing deck looking at the stars flying by, you and him attempting to bake brownies in your shared quarters. You and him.
Us.
You felt hot tears burn your eyes as the memories faded, revealing the glossy elevator door. You tried to keep them from escaping without messing up your makeup, but your reflection on the door told you that you hadn't done a very good job. The door pinged, opening soundlessly. You sniffled, wondering how much longer you could go on.
~~~
After Leonard had drained his eyes of moisture, he figured he needed to let Jim know where he was. He pulled his communicator out but to his surprise, he wasn't getting any signal from inside the hotel. Grumbling, he put his coat back on and opened the door. He stopped cold. Across the hallway, you stood, wide-eyed with mascara running down your cheeks. you both stood there staring at each other for a minute before Leonard decided to speak.
"[Y/n]...?" he choked out, feeling a familiar sting of tears in the back of his eyes. "What are you... what are you doing here?"
"I-I'm staying in this hotel," your voice cracked a little. You couldn't move your eyes away from his.
Leonard stayed silent. You weren't able to take it anymore. Tears stung your eyes as they fell, bringing your makeup down with them.
"Jesus Len, I miss you," your voice wavered. His expression reflected your own, conflicted as to whether he should close the door or run to your arms. Hastily deciding on the latter, he took a hesitant step towards you. When you didn't flinch, he moved closer until he was standing right in front of you. You threw your arms around his neck and buried your head in his neck. He reached out and grabbed your waist, pulling you as close to him as possible. He brought one arm up to grip your shoulder, allowing him to press his face into the safe familiarity of your hair, growing wet with tears. He drew away first, putting both of his hands on your shoulders.
"I'm so sorry," he murmured. "I messed up. Oh, I really messed up."
"Yes, you did," you whispered. "But you can still fix it."
He wrapped you in his arms once more. "Don't ever let me break up with you ever again."
"Oh, don't worry, Len," you sighed at the feeling of him back with you. "It won't ever happen again."
