Brendon looks thinner than he was the last time Dallon saw him.

His cheekbones are more prominent and his skin is pale and icy.

"Baby, when was the last time you ate something?" Dallon asks, looking at the boy next to him.

They are lying back on the trampoline, it's day time now, nearing golden hour.

Brendon shrugs.

"Does it matter?"

The light shines on Brendon so perfectly, the gold flecks in his chocolate eyes, the traces of freckles dusting his cheeks, the sway of his charcoal hair in the breeze.

"Of course it matters. You matter, Brendon."

Brendon sighs and turns his head to Dallon.

"I won't soon."

This hurts Dallon. So much.

Hearing Brendon say these things is like being stabbed in the chest.

Brendon used to be the happiest boy Dallon knew, he had so much light and laughter. He used to sing to people as they drove down the street, hanging his head out the car window. Dallon fell in love with Brendon's voice before anything. The first time he heard it his heart stopped, he thought he was going to die. Dallon couldn't stop smiling for the rest of that day.

Now, Brendon lost his voice. He lost his light.

Dallon lost his smile.

"Don't say that, please brendon. You don't mean that."

Dallon wants Brendon to live. He wants him to see the little kids down the street who they gave all their old toys to grow up and be teenagers just like them. He wants Brendon to hear all the music that hasn't come out yet. He just wants to see him smile as he pets a dog walking down the street.

He wants him to be alive.

"Why not? We are all going to die anyways."

"Well that's not for a long time. So many years ahead."

Dallon walks his fingers up Brendon's arm as the shorter boy sighs again, looking up at the sky.

"Just, stay for awhile. Please." Dallon pleads, making Brendon frown and look at him.

"I'll try." he whispers, a hand reaching out and touching Dallons face.

"For you, I will try."
