Chapter 1; gag me with a spoon

Monday , December 31st, 1984
Montgomery Household
Somewhere is southern New York

"No way" Jake screams "Yes way Madonna is so much better than The Cure" Heather  screams back they have been arguing about this for an hour.

"They are both two completely different genres you can't compare" he yells back at her "Amber tell him hes wrong" she crosses her arms across her chest

"Im sorry Heather, but hes right The Cure is so much better than Modanna" i shrug

"Ugh the two of you eat my shorts"  she walks out of the room and the sound of the music from downstairs pours into the room and then is silenced when the door slams shut.

"She's totally mental" he raises his arms in the air and then they drop back down.

"Totally" I say

I bring the bottle of coke to my lips tasting the sweet fizzy liquid on my tongue.

"Amber, Jake you two can head down now we are starting the countdown in five" it was my mother.

Her normally straight blond hair was now in frizzy curls, she had just gotten a perm. Something about a change for the new year.

I was the only girl in our town who didn't have a perm. I don't think I would ever do it. I can't stand the smell.

"Earth to amber"

"Yeah sorry, let's go"

"Gag me with a spoon!" Jake throws his head back at the sound of 'like a Virgin' playing from my families living room.

"This song is totally tubular dont cha think Jake" heather says with a smug look on her face.

"You little-" he's cut off by his mother scolding him.

"Okay heather we get it now change the record" her father says

The adults were all standing around in the family room with beer cans or glasses of champagne in their hands. I don't understand why they are always standing why can't they sit, it's honestly like so lame.

"5 seconds" my little sister Carrie says as she points to the television.

"Five"

"Four"

"Three"

"Two"

"One"

"Happy new year" everyone yells and takes a drink if whatever they had in their hands.
