The next couple of months passed by in a blur marked by Wednesday night band rehearsals and football games. I loved every second of it. Nothing is more fun than marching in the freezing cold.
Wednesday night rehearsals are interesting. They start at 6 to accommodate the sports people in band, which means that if you aren't in sports you're stuck at school until rehearsal starts. Some days it's not that bad. Other days the pressure of the homework load really does get to you though.
My favorite pre-rehearsal ordeal is trying to get food. A couple seniors usually go and get people food. There have been a couple of instances when something tragic happens to the friendly food person and everyone is panicky and hungry. Luckily, my mom doesn't mind driving over from the main city to the little town were my high school is to bring us pizza.
So it was really cold tonight. Like, really, really, realllllly cold. I was bundled up in two jackets, uggs, and I had fingerless gloves on. You know how California is stereotyped as being a warm, sunny place? Not at night! It was around 8 and about 30 degrees outside. Everyone was tired. So, we took a break, and what does everyone do to keep warm? We played tag in the dark. I'm not a huge fan of tag, but nothing compares to the rush of adrenaline you get while running around a football field with other band kids in the freezing dark. All of us panting for breath, we dragged ourselves off the field and collapsed.
I laid down on my back, looking up at the stars.
"Hey Alex?" I whispered.
"Yeah?" He answered.
"Look at that star," I said pointing to a bright one in Orion's Belt. "See how that one shines the brightest out of all the stars in the constellation? I want to shine that brightly one day."
"I know you will." Came his reply.
