Jerome's P.O.V.
Mitch tugged on his bag, reaching out to grab my hand as the two of us tried to run to catch up to the other 4 boys. They already had their bags and were wandering in the terminal quite a way ahead of us because Mitch and I were being too slow.
He yawned into his hand and nestled his head into my side as we caught up to the boys, standing at the gate and waiting to board. We were all in business class and so had priority boarding and had just been a little late for boarding, so we were rushed on board to find our seats before the economy class started to board.
We found our seats, all next to each other, and sat down. We were all seated towards the front of the plane, right at the front of the business class section, on the bottom of the double storied plane. We were also all flying non-stop from London to Texas, a ten and a half hour flight.
Mitch and I were in two conjoined seats for couples, Vikk and Lachlan behind us in the similar seats and then Preston and Rob across the aisle. Vikk and I were both in the aisle seats because the younger one of each couple was so insistent on having the window seat.
I grinned at Rob, across the aisle from me, where Preston was bouncing up and down in his seat. We were all for a long flight, especially as we had 3 hyped up boys who would undoubtedly be very tired and would probably complain a lot.
I sighed, settling down with Mitch's hand in mine. It was going to be a long night.
----------------------------------------------------------
The first half of the flight was normal, as least by my standards. We watched movies, played games, ate the provided in-flight meals and after 8 hours Mitch passed out on my shoulder with a blanket pulled over his shoulders and a peaceful look on his face.
Vikk and Lachlan behind us had passed out early into the flight and were lying curled together, their chairs reclining now and blankets pulled tightly around the two of them. Rob and Preston on the other hand were both wide awake and talking quietly together, occasionally glancing over and me and giggling. I didn't mind, they were both chill.
After those first eight hours though, I noticed that something was off. The flight attendants look frazzled and were hurrying up and down the aisle, looking both concerned and worried. It made me a little nervous, especially considering how pale some of the flight attendants seemed, and I squeezed the sleeping Mitch's hand for comfort.
Rob hadn't seemed to notice, despite the fact that he was still awake, which did reassure me for a little while but then two flight attendants stopped right next to me and whispered;
"We'll be going in for an emergency landing, the captain doesn't have any other options." I blinked, startled, and finally the attendants saw me looking at the two of them. They looked between themselves before one of them gave me a reassuring nod and headed up the front towards the captain.
I decided that now was a good time to wake Mitch up, and maybe the boys in the row behind me as well. I leaned across the aisle and grabbed Rob's attention too.
"Rob did you hear that?" He shook his head, bewildered. "We're making an emergency landing, somethings wrong."
He didn't say anything but instead leaned over and shook Preston awake, where he had been resting but wasn't quite asleep. I gently squeezed Mitch's arm until he started to stir, blinking tiredly at his rude and sudden awakening.
"Hey Mitchy, wake up sweetheart." I whispered, smiling through my anxiety to make sure that he was alright. "Wake up, come on."
"What's going on?" His voice slurred, still barely awake.
"I think we're going to be making an emergency landing sweetheart, I need you to wake up." He blinked, surprised, but it was that sentence that finally shook him awake and he sat up.
I seriously considered against waking up the two youngest members of the group behind me because I knew they would panic, but as the flight attendants wandered down the aisle they answered the question for me. They were waking up everyone, saying that the captain was about to make an announcement.
I stepped out into the aisle to wake the two youngest before the flight attendants could get to them, knowing they would panic if one of us wasn't there. I woke Vikk first and although he appeared surprised once he understood what was going on he moved to wake his boyfriend, who was much harder to wake.
Within a few minutes both of them were awake though, attentive and on edge after hearing what the flight attendants were telling other passengers. We didn't have to wait long however, because only 30 seconds later an announcement came over the speakers.
"Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking. We will be making an emergency landing in Washington shortly as there has been some mechanical problems with the plane. This is nothing to worry about but I will now turn the seatbelt sign on and I ask you to return to your seats for the remainder of the flight."
Mitch blinked at me and I squeezed his hand tightly, reassuring him that it was going to be okay. My heart was pounding in my chest and I was full of anxiety because I had heard the strain and desperation in the captains voice, telling me something that he wasn't. Something else was wrong, something bigger than what he was telling us.
The next half hour dragged on painfully and Mitch simply nestled himself into my side, his eyes glancing out of the window constantly. Preston and Rob were both on edge and were trying to distract themselves with movies, while Vikk and Lachlan were talking quietly, unnerved, but they both gave me strained smiles when I turned back to look at them.
"Ladies and gentlemen we are now 5 minutes away from landing and are beginning our decent. Please follow normal procedures and make sure your window blinds are open, tray tables are up and your seatbelts are fastened. Flight attendants, prepare for landing."
There was a solid pause before the captain spoke again.
"The mechanical failure will effect our landing so it may be bumpy. Do not worry."
I saw Mitch's eyes widen and he clung to me, biting down heavily on his lip. This was when the clamouring started, the other flyers wanting to know exactly what was going on. The flight attendants looked scared and bewildered but didn't say anything, instead reassuring everyone that it was okay and checking that everyone had their seatbelts on.
"Jerome?" Mitch whispered in my ear, speaking for the first time in hours.
"Yeah Mitch?" I squeezed his hand.
"I'm scared." He whispered. "What if we crash?"
"Don't think about it Mitch, just think about now. I'm here, you're here and the boys are still here. Remember that." He nodded slowly but he knew that I was scared, just as he was.
Just as I felt the plane begin to descend I glanced over at the other boys, who were huddled together, terrified. Lachlan and Vikk were curled up tightly, so scared, and Rob and Preston were still attempting to distract themselves.
My heart dropped into my stomach as I saw the runway fast approaching underneath us. We were going too fast, far to fast.
"BRACE! BRACE! BRACE! BRACE FOR IMPACT!"
