Vikk's P.O.V.
The library was my favourite place to hang out, much to Lachlan's disgust. He hated the quiet and the dusty smell of mold and paper and Madame Pince constantly hanging over your back, breathing down your back if you dared touch her precious books.
I, on the hand, loved it. It was a place of creation and a place of magic, of spells yet to be uncovered and pages filled with new words; for me it was a place of learning, but it was also a place of peace. I took any opportunity I had to be there, in between lessons, on weekend, in the evening when it was the quietest unless the exams were drawing nearer.
Lachlan liked the Quidditch pitch more than anything else on the school ground except perhaps for the Forbidden Forest, which he had snuck into on multiple occasions just for fun. When he wasn't zooming around several dozen metres about the ground on a broomstick he was either in empty classroom, more peaceful than the library because he hated the noises other people made, or he was wandering the halls, maybe he was up in the Owlery or in the kitchens with the house elves, I could never be sure.
He wandered all the time, trying to find somewhere to be alone.
This time I found him beside the lake under an old oak, his eyes following the giant squid as it swum just below the crystal clear surface.
"Hey Lachy." I said, throwing my bag full of books down onto the grass beside him. "How was charms?"
He shrugged, twirling his wand between his fingers.
"We're doing the summoning charm again-" A common spell to begin with for fourth years, accio, but both of us had already learned it. "But it's boring. I can do it already but Flitwick doesn't give me anything extra to do."
Lachlan and I were both blessed with being gifted at charms, spells came easily to us and sometimes we would practise together, getting so far as nonverbal spells which we didn't normally learn until sixth. Transfiguration and defence (defence against the dark arts) were our strong points but Lachlan leaned more towards herbology, flying and care of magical creatures while I preferred potions and runes. I preferred academic subjects, Lachlan liked the hands on stuff.
"I'll see if I can get you the standard book of spells for the year above again, we could go through that one and practise them." He hummed, barely acknowledging that I had spoken.
I tugged on my tie, the blue striped one that indicated my house. Lachlan's was red; supposedly it meant he was courageous and brave and mine that I was intelligent and creative and loved learning but I knew they didn't really embody who we were.
You couldn't sum a person up with simple words and someone could love learning and also be brave, so where to then? I had vocally criticized the house system ever since I had arrived t Hogwarts 4 years earlier and to my surprise, people listened. Many of them didn't understand why we were categorized either, into houses that could dictate the outcome of our lives.
While Lachlan was brave, he stood up for those who couldn't stand themselves, he took leaps and tried new things, he was also kind, patient and loyal (all Hufflepuff traits) and he was intelligent (Ravenclaw) and he was ambitious and a leader (Slytherin). And since he had been sorted in Gryffindor he had changed, grown as person, as had everyone else.
It wasn't fair that your future be defined by how you acted as an eleven year old, the Sorting Hat couldn't see the future.
"You tired?" He nodded, his head resting against mine. It had been a long day already and although most of the school would be in the Great Hall now, dinner was being served just as the sun slipped over the horizon, neither of us made a move to get up.
We were in a world we didn't seem to fit into, muggleborns who didn't know things like this existed until 11, critical of systems that had been in place for centuries. We were stirring things up, questioning what they took for granted and making them think.
"Your dorm tonight?" Lachlan asked, finally stirring. I nodded, sliding my hand into his.
We had an agreement with two boys; another Ravenclaw and another Gryffindor, that we would swap dorms so technically all of the bed were full. It didn't matter that we would sneak into the others bed at 1am, hold each other tight when things seemed too much and ignored anyone who said otherwise.
"I think I'd be best to go now, it's gonna get cold soon and I'd rather not be fighting through several hundred students in half an hour." He nodded and tucked his wand into the pocket of his robes, taking my hand as we headed towards the Ravenclaw tower. It wasn't that far from the Gryffindor tower.
"You heard me before, yet you hear me again, then I die till you call me again." The eagle knocker chided, but I knew the answer before it had even finished.
"An echo." I said sharply and the door clicked open, leading Lachlan and I into a completely empty common room. The fire was crackling away but neither of us stayed long enough to get any warmth from it, instead I made a beeline for the stairs with Lachlan trailing behind me tiredly.
The dorm room was empty just like I thought it would be, five beds and the mess that belonged to 5 teenage boys all over the floor. My bed was on the far side right next to the window and the two of us crawled onto it, slipping under the covers side by side.
Neither of cared we were still in our robes, wands still in our pockets and we hadn't cleaned ourselves up or anything. I honestly just wanted to sleep and I could tell Lachlan wanted to as well because the second his head hit the pillow his eyes closed.
"Night Lachy." I whispered, curling up beside him. I saw his smile, and I drifted off to sleep.
----------------------------------------------------
We awoke the next morning earlier, earlier than anyone else in the dorm, and the only thing I could hear were their snores. Lachlan was lying awake opposite me and he gave me a small smile when he saw I was awake, his hand trailing through my hair.
"Hey Vikk." He whispered, his eyes crinkling happily.
"Breakfast time?"
"Breakfast time."
---------------------------------------------------------
We survived the day again, going through all of our classes and breaks while hardly seeing each other throughout the day because we hardly had any classes together. The only classes we had together were history of magic; a nightmare of a class so we spent the whole time passing notes, charms which was nice, and defence against the dark arts.
It was a day just like any other, quiet, crazy and full of magic. Fourth year was moving fast and I knew it wouldn't be long before exams would be around the corner.
Lachlan swung his legs as he sat on my bed, while I sat on the floor and practised charms. Most of the time the dorms were empty during the day as everyone was either in class, in the library, common room or the great hall.
It was peaceful. I liked it.
