Virgil walked into the school with his head down. He had been on a tour of the school earlier during the summer, but he wasn't there when every other student was and hadn't seen the school full.
His heart was pounding and his stomach was doing flips as it got harder for him to breath. He continued walking, looking down and taking deep breaths. Four seconds in, hold for seven, exhale for eight.
Soon, he had calmed down a little and was able to breath properly.
He walked to his locker and opened it, grabbed his stuff for English, and headed to his first class. Once he got there, he sat down at the way back and set his bag down.
A boy walked over and sat down next to him. The boy had vitiligo and blond highlights in his golden brown hair. He had a black beanie on and a leather jacket covering a black graphic T-Shirt with a yellow snek on it.
Virgil tried avoiding eye contact but ended up meeting his gaze anyway's.
The boy's eyes were mismatched, like Virgil's, but instead of one purple and one green eye, he had one brown and one gold eye.
The boy held out his hand. "I'm Derril."
Virgil shook it. "I-uh-I'm Virgil-"
"I'm guessing you're new here?"
He nodded.
"Anatol and I can help you out. You know, be your welcome committee of some sort."
"Uhm.... whose Anatol?"
"My boyfriend."
He didn't like the idea of hanging out with Derril, but he didn't want to seem rude, so he just said, "Oh... then... uh... sure..."
"You're not a homophobe.... are you?"
"What? No!"
"Good."
The teacher walked in and started the class.
"Alright kids, we have a new student!" He motioned for Virgil to stand up.
Virgil stood shakily, sweating a bit.
"Why don't you introduce yourself? Tell us your name and.... Hm.... favorite ice cream flavor!"
"Uhm... well... I'm Virgil Jackson... and... uh... I don't eat ice cream much, so I don't know what my favorite flavor is...." He stuttered.
"Then favorite color."
".... uh... Purple or black..."
The teacher nodded, and Virgil sat down.
Wow. You already had one embarrassing thing happen. Let's see how much you can embarrass yourself today, He thought to himself.
~at lunch-
Apparently, Virgil and Derril had all of their classes together.
That was... comforting...
The bell rang for lunch, and Derril led Virgil to his and Anatol's usual table.
A boy with ginger hair was sitting at the table. He was wearing a denim jacket over a light green shirt and acid-washed jeans. Underneath his glasses, emerald green eyes shone brightly with the same mischievous twinkle that Derril has.
Derril sat down next to Anatol, smiling. "Anatol, this is Virgil. We're gonna be his welcome committee of sorts."
Anatol grinned. "Okay! That sounds fun!" He kissed Derril's cheek, and Derril smiled a bit.
