Jonah wants to go to the prom, but he finds that nobody can go with him. Told from a single POV.
Jonah POV
This was going to be the worst night of my life. I knew that my friends were going to the prom, and that they'd probably all have dates. I'm not angry at them or anything, I just wish that I wasn't alone.
Every girl that I wanted to ask had already got a date, which meant that I felt really isolated. Was it even worth me going to the prom? At that point, I didn't think it was.
I went to the prom anyway, and I spotted Andi and Buffy, with Walker and Marty, who were their dates. I wasn't sure what to do.
Andi: Hey!
Buffy: You okay?
Me: I'm fine, just here on my own, that's all.
Walker: No need to be sad, you can hang out with us!
Marty: We don't have to be individual dates, we can be a group!
Me: As much as that sounds great, shouldn't there be an even number of people?
Andi: Don't worry about that. We're waiting for someone.
Buffy: Maybe you can hang out with them?
Me: Who is she?
Andi: Well, HE is coming over now!
I turned around and saw my best friend Cyrus Goodman walking towards us. I was surprised that he didn't have a date either.
Buffy: You made it!
Cyrus: Did you think I would miss it?
Andi: We thought as no one asked you, you may pass on coming along.
Me: No-one asked you Cyrus ? Are they insane?
The girls and their dates looked at me and chuckled lightly. I was beginning to think I was saying the wrong thing, when Cyrus responded to me.
Cyrus: I guess I'm not popular.
Me: That's not true. And I didn't get asked by anyone either.
Cyrus: I don't understand, surely someone must've wanted to come with you Jonah?
Me: Clearly not.
Cyrus: Ah well, at least we get to hang out with our friends.
Looking away from Cyrus momentarily, I saw the others give me encouraging looks. When I didn't do anything, they decided to go and dance, leaving me alone with Cyrus.
Cyrus: They all seem so happy don't they?
Me: Yes, they're all great together.
Cyrus: Do we have to be alone during this?
I stared at Cyrus with intrigue, wanting to know what he meant by that question. He looked slightly nervous.
Me: Well, we can try and find people to dance with if you---.
Cyrus: N-no! I meant... can we be each other's prom date?
I found it difficult to understand what Cyrus had asked. I allowed myself to gaze at him and I saw someone who actually wanted to be with me.
Me: You want to be my date, Cyrus?
Cyrus: Yes Jonah, more than anything.
Me: Come on then, let's go and dance!
Cyrus: Okay!
I grabbed Cyrus' hand and we joined the others. We wrapped our arms around each other and simply swayed gently to the music. I felt Cyrus rest his head on my shoulder and this prompted me to do the same to him.
I closed my eyes and I really enjoyed the feeling of being close to him. I pulled away slowly and looked into his eyes.
Me: Um... I'm new to this, but...
Cyrus: But what?
I gently leaned in and connected our lips. The music went silent and the background faded rapidly as I saw that Cyrus really was the only one I cared about. Moving apart, I looked to our friends who all smiled. I knew at that moment everything was going to be okay.
