"Felicity, it's almost 6:30. Are you awake?"
I groaned in response to siginify that I was indeed awake, but not necessarily with it.
"Felicity Bailey, if you're late for your last day of school, don't come complaining to me." Mum said, as I heard her thump out of my tiny pastel purple bedroom.
I had totally forgotten it was my last day of school; I was supposed to be up a half an hour ago.
I slipped open my eyes and rubbed them slightly. Then, flung off my covers and sat up in bed, leaning my head into my hands.
Without much recognition, I had ended up in my bathroom, tugging at my lips and tying up my strawberry hair into a quick sloppy bun to wash my face.
I cupped my hands uner the cool and clear running water and watched it swirl, reflecting off my milky-white freckled skin. Once enough water had filled up, I splashed it onto my face, just to wake me up and take off any oils.
After drying off on the soft purple hand towell, I studied my face closely in the mirror. Noticing the placement of every freckle,
noticing how some of my pale eyelashes were longer than others,
noticing how today, my eyes were a darker green than normal.
For a few brief seconds, I spaced out. Totally zoning into my reflection.
"Maybe I could dye my hair dark." I whispered to myself as I stripped the hair tie from my bun, inspecting the wavy strands that fell down my back.
I clicked my phone to check the time. It was 6:37, and Onyx had texted me saying she was on her way over to my house so we could walk to our final day of senior year together.
I didn't ever wear much makeup. Only light mascara. I never wanted to cover my freckle face, because it was the only thing I actually liked about myself.
Frantically running over to my wardrobe, I pulled out all the articles I had set aside for today. I chose baggy high waist cargo pants, a tight cropped olive green top, and short brown combat boots.
I took the top half of my mid-back length hair and secured it with an orange elastic.
I got ready and put together pretty quickly. By the time I was finished, I could see Onyx bopping up my driveway; her shiny chocolate brown strands of hair bouncing as she took each step.
As I waited for her usual entrance into my room, I picked up the picture frame I had on my side table and tried to hold back the tears.
It was a picture of Mazy and I one day before the accident; it was our 10th birthday. Our faces were painted with pink and white frosting. My left canine tooth was missing, and Mazy had her arm stretched over my shoulder.
I smiled slightly, remembering the last happy day we had together. I missed her, a lot. But there was nothing I could do about it now.
"Knock knock, Lic!" Onyx said enthusiastically.
Onyx always looked perfect. Her hair was silky and pin straight. Her makeup was always so precise, and today her outfit was gorgeous.
She had on a black skater skirt, black converse with tall white socks, and a bright purple tee shirt, that was tight enough to accent her shapely hips.
When she saw me looking at the picture, she immediately lost her smile.
"Don't look at that right now, Lic. Don't make yourself upset on our last day." Her gentle hand rubbed my back.
"Not a day goes by where I don't miss her, Onyx." I sighed.
"Well cheer up! Were graduating from hell today, remember!" She shot up and danced a little, causing me to crack a smile.
"You sure do always know how to cheer me up, Evans."
Onyx winked and I grabbed my tan bag and we both walked out the door.
"Are we meeting the guys at the usual spot?" I asked, nervously biting my lip.
"Like we do every last day of school, Lic." She confirmed.
We reached my kitchen, as my mum sat at the island reading the paper.
"Morning," she said without a look at either of us, "did you eat, Onyx?"
"Yes, thank you though, Mrs. Bailey."
Mum smiled, then removed her reading glasses and studied me.
"You look great, Felicity. You're so grown up." She smiled and hugged me. "Now, what do you want for breakfast?"
"Nothing," I replied swiftly, "I'll be eating at school. Otherwise we'll be late."
Mum shot me a questioning look, but then nodded.
"Right, you two should be on your way then. Have a good day."
We both shot teethy smiles and made our way to the door.
"So," Onyx started, as she shot me a sly glare, "You.. gonna tell Michael you still like him today?"
My eyes locked on her and her devious little smirk. "I don't like Michael like that! He's my best friend!"
"Oh come on, Lic! I've known for years. I can tell when you like someone, and I know you've always liked him."
"You don't know me like that, Onyx." I said as I looked down, watching my boots clunk against the sidewalk.
Onyx rolled her eyes, "Give it up, Felicity. Just accept the fact that not only Mazy knew you better than you do yourself. Mazy wasn't your only best friend. Besides, you were ten, what was there to even know?"
I couldn't believe she would stoop that low. She knew how I felt about talking about Mazy. Onyx just didn't get it. She didn't understand why I was so upset seven years after Mazy's death. I told her She had fallen off the slide, if only she knew that Mazy was gone because of me.
I soaked up the starting tears, and didn't say a word.
"Hey, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that."
"Forget it, it's fine. Lets just drop it, okay?"
We walked in silence the rest of the way to the school, but I was so ready to be out of there.
