"HEY, NICK, WHAT'S UP?" HAJIRA GREETED THE ACTOR AS SHE PICKED UP HER PHONE. Typing on her keyboard, she held the phone up to her ear on her left shoulder. Multitasking was somehow a talent of hers. Well, if you can even call it a talent.
"I just wanted to know if you're free for dinner tomorrow," he replied quickly, a sign he had been waiting to ask that, which was apparently not caught by Hajira. He had been waiting quite some time ever since their first outing to ask her again but more bluntly.
"Oh, uh, sure. What time?" she asked nonchalantly, thinking nothing of it, really. "I get off of work around five so I could meet you wherever you choose—"
"Jira, please mind my bluntness but how about we make it a date?" he carefully interrupted, not sure how she'd react. His expectation had been sound enough when he heard her phone accidentally drop, a clear sign she had dropped it.
She was shocked, to say the least. No one asks her on dates. No one had in a long time and Nicholas wasn't exactly mindful of her own situation with Rafael. "U-Uh, you said a d-date?"
"Yes."
"I, uh, I-I will have to get back to on that, s-sorry. Actually, um, I'm getting another call, s-so I'll call you l-later," she deeply swallowed, making an excuse to avoid a further awkward conversation with the Casanova man. Hanging up, she looked at her phone, noticing she received a message from Rafael. He wanted to talk, by that bench, no doubt.
And like the message requested, she went to go converse with him, at the bench they seemed to favor. "So, should I assume something else went awry?" she asked cautiously.
"No, something went right for once."
"And that would be?"
"Let's just say Jane got some good ol' revenge on her stepsisters and Petra is definitely not gonna be enjoying today," he beamed, a victorious smirk prominent upon his features. Elaborating further, he had shut off the power & water to the suite Petra was staying in but also managed to help Jane with her issue. Hajira snickered at the situations, delighted by their outrageous solutions.
"I shouldn't be laughing but—that is hilariously awesome! Nice." She laughed with Rafael, feeling like something was finally coming together.
"It is!"
"God, the one time highschool tactics come in handy."
"Come on, high school wasn't that bad," he teased, not really thinking much of his experience.
"Yeah, not bad but I'll take the now over that!"
"Well, if I was in high school with you, I would've set those kind of people straight."
"If we were in high-school together, you wouldn't have noticed me," she shot right back.
"I would've, it's impossible not to!" he beamed, seemingly fervent in his belief that he would. With a laugh, he noticed her skeptical smile, "Okay, maybe not!"
"Told you so."
"But look at what I would had been missing." He smiled at her, seemingly getting lost in those eyes of hers. Hell, he ended up getting lost into the beauty she held. But, she never really noticed that he did.
She merely smiled back at him, feeling content with just this. That feeling she had near the very man that caught her attention. Like a great aching in her chest she'd rather not get rid of, no matter how much it was killing her.
'Ding!' her phone rang, a message from Nicholas about a 'date'. She sighed, biting her lip at the message itself. She was too nice to refuse a date from a friend. Especially when she was sure she'd end up thinking about Rafael.
"Everything alright?" he asks suddenly, noticing her troubled expression.
"Yeah, yeah. I, uh, got asked out by...a friend of mine. Nicholas Casanova."
"Oh...well, are you gonna go out with him?" he asked with uncertainty in his tone, knowing the man she mentioned.
"I-I'm not sure. It's been so long ever since I was on a date and uh, he's not exactly my crush. It's weird. Lot to consider, I guess."
And there it was again, an opening. As fate would have it, Rafael felt as though he could take a risk. With a deep breath, he decided.
"Including the fact that I have feelings for you."
"W-What?" she asked in shock, staring back at him. She gave a small laugh, initially thinking it was some joke. Her breath hitched and mouth hung open, she stared at him with utter confusion. Her heart felt warm but in her gut, it was worse. It churned with uncertainty as to what he meant. 'There was no way' she thought but his words rang in her head, like some church bell.
"Look, I know this is not a great time but it...just in case it..." he led off, undoubtedly confused, himself. "In case it means anything or if it changes anything." He looked at her confused expression, meeting her eyes with just about the same look.
"Wait, wait, I don't understand. Y-You said you see me as a sister and you're my boss and—and..."
"I-I know, I did but then...something changed. Look, I've never felt this type of connection with anyone in my entire life. Not like this."
"I, uh, god, um..." she stuttered.
"Hajira, this—this is crazy, I know. But I've never been the type of guy that believes in fate or destiny. What are the chances, huh? We met at that party and we're here, together through a lot already. It sounds crazy, but doesn't this just all kind of feel meant to be? I know it's a lot, a-and you need to think, but I just, I had to tell you" he breathed out, relieved to finally get it out. It felt good but then he also had that fear of her answer. As his own phone rang, he reluctantly left Hajira by herself.
She had one hell of a choice to make.
