"So," Edd began. "How long does Tom stay here?"Matt thought for a bit. "Well, he could stay forever! We have been looking for another roommate."
"That's so we could divide the rent three ways," Edd pointed out. "Because we haven't been making much money lately."
That was true. Edd tutored kids in art, but not many parents were willing to pay for their kids to improve in a skill that wasn't necessary. Meanwhile, Matt's been working as an assistant at the Magic shop, but lately he's had a bunch of days off because he couldn't keep his hands off the merchandise.
"Well, maybe when Tom learns more about the Earth he'll want to pitch in and get a job. He seems like he'd be fine with helping," Matt argued. "Besides, he needs us. We can show him the world!"
Edd sighed. "I regret watching Aladdin with you."
"Please Edd!" Matt begged. "Pleaseeee! We've never met real life aliens, except for that one time when we almost died. But even then, they didn't look like normal humans!"
Edd looked unsure. "He doesn't look completely human."
Matt teared up. He looked down at his lifelong friend. "Please Edd."
Edd let out a sigh of defeat. "Fine."
Matt squealed. "Yay! Thank you Edd! I promise I'll look for another job to help with rent."
Edd grumbled. "You better."
It was late at night, and the two roommates were wondering what to do about Tom.
Matt wanted him to stay, so they could teach Tom about all the wonders of Earth. Matt was very blunt when he stated that he wanted to give Tom the chance for a new life.
Edd on the other hand didn't know if they could fully trust Tom. Sure, Edd loved meeting new people and making friends, but Tom was different. Edd could sense Tom was harmless, but he worried about what Tom had said about his leader. If Tom was really this leaders right hand man, who's to say that the leader won't come for him.
Edd didn't like the idea of endangering his best friend. But, if it made Matt happy, then Edd would go for it.
"Do you think Tom's asleep by now?" Matt asked. Edd shrugged. "He didn't even eat dinner."
"Maybe he ate before he fell to Earth?" Edd suggested.
Matt looked away. "Don't you think he looked kinda thin? His clothes looked unrealistically loose fitting. Either Red Leader doesn't care about giving his workers clothes that fit, or this alien that fell from the sky has been practically starving himself."
Edd sighed. "There's really nothing we can do about it now Matt. We'll make him a hardy breakfast when he wakes up."
"What about drinking? I don't care that Tom's an alien. I'm pretty sure most things have to drink water."
"Most?" Edd asked.
"Flamingos don't need to drink water," Matt nonchalantly said.
Edd rolled his eyes. "Sure they don't, Matt."
The next morning, both Matt and Edd were woken up by the savory smell of bacon.
Edd smiled in his half-awake daze. "Since when could Matt cook?"
Edd's eyes shot open and he jumped out of bed and raced to the kitchen. Matt couldn't cook. Matt couldn't cook at all. The ginger could barely make a bowl of cereal without setting something on fire.
When Edd reached the kitchen, huffing and puffing mind you, he saw Tom leaning over a waffle iron, and a greasy pan with bacon sizzling on it. Matt was sitting at the table, stuffing his mouth with waffles and bacon.
Matt looked up from his food and smiled at Edd.
"Tommafebreakfaft!" the ginger said, mouth full of food. Edd chuckled. He turned towards Tom.
"You know how to cook?" Edd asked, marveling over how well-done the food looked.
Tom turned away from the food and nodded, looking up at Edd with an embarrassed smile. "I was forced to do a lot of cooking while working for Red leader," he explained. "As much as I hate to say it, it seems like working for that bastard actually taught me something useful."
Tom poured the bacon in the pan onto a plate, setting a couple waffles on it as well. He handed the plate to Edd.
"I hope you enjoy it," Tom said.
Edd took the plate and smiled in return.
Edd sat down at the table, across from Matt, and started eating his food. He stopped momentarily, when he saw Tom sit at the table and stare at Matt.
Tom seemed confused, yet entertained with Matt, as the ginger continued to stuff his face.
Edd swallowed the food in his mouth. "Aren't you gonna eat, Tom?"
Tom shook his head, and he stared down at the table. "I uh..." he paused for a moment, and then forced a smile. "Where I come from, my people only need to eat every so often. We definitely don't need to eat as much as humans do."
Edd skeptically nodded. "Okay."
Tom let out a quiet, barely noticeable sigh of relief. But Edd heard it. He made a mental note of that one small sound.
Edd knew Tom was lying. It was obvious. Edd spent so much time with people he could pick up on obvious things like that. Tom was lying.
But why?
