It's been a few weeks since I first met Dylan. I'd see him in Math and Physics, and he always had this serioius look on his face. Whenever I spotted him, he was always alone, which surprised me because based on my first impression, I thought he would be the kind of person to hang out with the popular crowd or the jocks, and be really social. "I guess you really can't judge someone based on their appearance" I thought to myself.
I felt bad and wondered if I should go up and talk to him, but always decided against it for some reason.
Wednesday 11:40am
The next day Laurel approached me during lunch. I was deep in thought when I was startled when she decided that slapping me on the arm was the best way to get my attention.
"DUDE, hello? earth to Brianne!" she said. Then proceeded to wave her hand in front of my face.
"huh? what?" I asked confused
"Have been listening to anything I've been saying? I was talking about homecoming and how we NEED to get a group together!"
"Oh...I said, uh lets keep it small then"
"Ugh don't be so anti-social" Laurel complained "I already talked to Maya and Sam. They suggested we do a potluck to save money and carpool to the dance."
Maya and Sam were our two friends from Middle school, and got together over the summer.
"Dang Laurel, homecoming isn't for another three weeks, why are you planning so far in advanced?"
"Cause" Laurel said in a sassy tone "I think it will be better if we plan now and so we don't need to worry about it later"
"It isn't really not a big deal, just make plans like the week of."
"Ohmigod" Laurel exclaimed "You can't do that! that's waaay too late to start planning. Here leave it up to me I'll do all the planing...just come. Even though I know how you aren't interested in school events."
"Sure whatever, I probably won't be doing anything better anyways"
Laurel hugged me out of happiness. I had no idea why she was so excited, it's just a dance. But if it made her happy that I went, then I'll force myself to go.
"But one question"
"What's that"
"Do I have to wear a dress?" I complained.
"Please tell me you're joking Bri...!!"
"Hahaha I'm just kidding, I know I know, I gotta go to class we will talk later" I laughed as I walked away.
"Mhmm suree" Laurel said scarcastially
Thursday 10:45am
"Omg BRI Guess who asked me to Homecoming!"
I looked up from the book I was reading, to find Laurel jumping about with excitement.
"Who" I asked
"JEFFREY!"
"Oh dear god, you got to be shitting me Laurel, and you're happy about that?!"
Jeffrey was my friend in middle school, But recently became a stuck up jerk. Ever since he became popular, status was his number one priotity. It annoyed the hell out of me, that he thought he was better than I. However Laurel's liked him for the longest time, probably because of his blonde hair and blue eyes.... typical. I never approved of this infatuation, but she's my best friend so I have to support her.
"Just be nice ok?" Laurel begged.
"Sure anything for you" I replied. "Also did you get your dress?"
"YESS It's a strapless blue flowy type dress"
"Oh pretty can't wait to see you in it!" I said
"Oh and by the way, Sarah and Brandon are in our group so thats so far six people total, I'm going to invite Allison and Michael, then that will give us eight people, plus you....have you been asked yet?"
"Uh....no I'll just hire a 25 year old strange guy to play my date" I said jokingly
"Haha ok, well find one soon or something! Also you have a dress right?"
"Yup, I need to go to class, I'll see you tomorrow!" I lied about the dress part. I was sort of tired of this whole homecoming talk.
3:00pm
I was relieved when school was finally over. When I walked outside I saw Dylan standing alone, as usual. He was about the leave and head to his Mom, who had come to pick him up, when I stopped him.
"Dylan" I called out.
He turned around at the sound of his name, and looked surprise that someone even knew who he was. I have no idea why. He's not really a stranger, I have two classes with him.
"Yeah?" He asked.
"So..." I began. "My friend Laurel and I are going to homecoming with a group of friends, and I was wondering you wanted to join. I don't know if you're into dances or anything..."
"Uh no I'm not really sorry"
"Well neither am I, but Laurel sort of begged me to find another guy to join the group" I reponded.
"And you're asking me to....?"
"Uh...yea? Is something wrong? I just thought it might be nice for you to meet some people. Every time I see you, you're always standing alone...."
"Oh well then sure" he said with a smile that I think was genuine. And it was a nice smile not going to lie.
"Well let me give you my number so I can keep you updated" My number ended in 6-9 and without thinking I quietly made a 69 joke, and immediately turned red.
"Uh what?" he laughed
"Uh....nothing" I said, and began to turn away.
"No no it's good! haha I haven't heard a perverted joke, or any joke for that matter, since I've moved here" he said with a smile.
"Yeah....haha well I'll talk to you later" I said and began to walk home.
