Chapter 8: The Uninvited - Part II

When we arrived at the high school, I helped Dylan unload the cases of water and snacks. When we finally got down to the field, I saw Serena waving and coming in our direction.

"Finally you're here! Brianne! yes the more the merrier!" she said as she gave me a hug. "Here let me get that for you, our tents back here". Dylan and I followed Serena a little ways. There were three tents, a cooler for drinks in the middle, and a huge pile of snacks. 

"Brianne! You came!" Ryan said as he came to give me a side hug. Looks like they were expecting me after all. However I felt bad because I didn't help fundraise. I followed Serena into one of the tents where I dropped off my stuff. It wasn't long before Laurel and Jessica came in.

"What're you doing here?" Laurel asked, in a snobby tone.

"uhm...." I began, but thankfully Serena chimed in and saved my ass.

"She's with us didn't you know?"

"Uh....no who invited her?" Laurel asked

"Well since Chris happens to be on the track team, he also happens to be friends with us; Me Bri, Ryan, Dylan....you know how that works right?" Serena replied.

I could see the anger in Jessica and Laurel's eyes.

"Whatever" Laurel replied, as she and Jessica grabbed their stuff and exited the tent.

Serena turned to me "Well, looks like you and I will be the only ones in this tent! But I might actually hang with Ryan for the night!"

"Ohhh!" I nudged her, "Does someone have a crush?" 

"Maybe....but don't tell! I don't think he knows!" 

"Haha don't worry I won't!" 

Serena and I got talking about her love for Ryan when Dylan walked in.

"Hey looks like im crashing with you two"

"Ew no" Serena said "Go stay with Chris or Ryan!"

"Yeah not happening...Jessica and Laurel are over there all pissed and Ryan snores"

"Ugh fine whatever do what you want" Serena said "I'm gonna go start walking"

It was required that at least one person from each team was on the track walking at all times.

"Well this turned out well don't you think?" I said

"Yeah actually not bad, glad I made you come! Or else I'd be listening to Chris and Jessica fight all night" Dylan said.

"I was being scarcastic....Laurel and Jessica probably hate me 10x more now"

"aah naah don't worry about them! come on, let's go catch up with Serena" Dylan said as he exited the tent. I just sighed then followed after him.

After a full day of games, and walking around the track and hanging out with friends we had a walk of silence, to honor those who have died from cancer.  I felt Dylans hand on my shoulder and turned towards him.

I smiled as i acknowledge him, as we were suppsosed to stay silent.

"My grandfather passed away from cancer" Dylan whispered. I was shocked how he would come out and say something like that. He's not usually the type.

"Oh...I'm so sorry!" I replied quietly.

"It's ok, I'm just glad he's not suffering anymore"

I didn't know what to say so I just smiled back at him.

When the walk of silence was over we all went back to the tent. Jessica, Laurel, and Chris went into their tent and I could here Jessica and Laurel laugh loudly about something.

"Alright I'm gonna go stay with Ryan in his tent" Serena said, as she began to pick up her sleeping bag and backpack.

"What?" I asked "Dylan why don't you go instead"

"Uhm sure" he replied.

"No it's ok I'll go, I'll see you guys in the morning or whatever" Serena insisted. I don't know why, but she hurried out of the tent as quickly as possible.

"Alright well...." Dylan began.

"Wanna play 13?" I asked, I didn't know what to do, and I was trying to break the awkwardness between us.

"Sure why not" Dylan said.

I began to shuffle the cards, and we started playing. We were on our third game when Dylan asked

"Do you wanna go for a walk? I'm kind of getting tired of this game"

"Uh sure....let me grab my jacket and put on my sweats"

"Alright, I'll wait for you outside" he said as he exited the tent.
