TRACK NINE: PAPER PLANES

daniel watched at his shoes hit the pavement, the hot sun beating down at his back. in his hand, he carried a half-empty tea can, and in his other was his board. he was supposed to go skating with pj but he was busy, then he asked holly and she was working on writing a song. holly had texted her boyfriend after their meeting at the record label, their signer- cole h.- told them that they needed to write an actual song before they got started. holly sat down and started writing as soon as she got home- leaving daniel to fend for himself at the skate park.

he didn't mind though, he was very proud of them. they rocked it at the little concert almost a month ago and they deserved success. liam's mom was going to throw a party for them that weekend, everyone was invited, including the brunet.

as he approached the metal fence he sat down his drink by a tree and dropped off his phone and earbuds. he never skated with them on his body anymore, not after he fell really hard and landed on his phone, shattering it. he went three months without a phone and he couldn't handle that again.

the boy entered the rink, taking notice to the two other boys around his age who were huddled around the other end of the park, boards in hand. two girls sat behind them, high skirts and even higher knee socks. they wore rollerskates.

the brunet slapped his board down, placing his foot on the middle and pushed off with his other, quickly sliding it onto the wood as he flew down the ramp, turning his body to move to the side as he approached another ramp. he flew up it diagonally, stopping at the landing before going down that ramp and kicking his board back, doing a flip before running up another hill and catching his board in his hand. one of the boys hooted from across the park, daniel looking up with a sheepish smile to watch as one of them skated down their hill and stopped at the bottom.

the brunet skated around for a good thirty minutes before he took a break to get a drink of tea, sitting under the shade of the tree for a moment. he was looking down at his phone when his shoulder was impaled by the tip of a paper plane. his head shot up when he heard footsteps approaching, he held the plane in his hand in confusion. then someone stepped into view, that someone and his stupid blue eyes and even stupider smirk.

"fancy seeing you here," he spoke, standing in front of daniel.

dan looked up through thick eyelashes, mouth slightly agape. why was phil here? did he skate? "why are you here?"

"last time i checked this was a public park, howell."

"shut up, lester." the brunet stood to his feet, grabbing his board from the bark on the tree and heading back inside the fence. he could feel phil's eyes on his back as he slid off the landing and up another, doing the same route as last time.

he looked over at the fence when he heard clapping, phil was doing it to mock him. daniel glared at him through the bright light of the sun, skating back over to his original landing and crossing his arms.

"if you're here to mock me, you can leave."

"no i'm not mocking you at all, you're really good." he was lying. he had to be. phil never spoke a word to dan before this, nothing nice anyway. dan almost believed him before he saw the spark of amusement behind his sky eyes, then he smirked once he noticed dan's face falling.

"you're fucking a dick, you know that right?"

"you're a loser, howell. i don't know why holiday even went on a date with you, let alone say yes to being your girlfriend."

"i like your music, not you, asshole. and this is why she never choose you," daniel shot right back, loving the way the older boy's face twisted into confusion, then shock, then finally anger. it gave hima spark of control and he craved it. "holly told me you had a thing for her, but boo hoo, no one wants a boy with mommy issues."

"you don't know what you're talking about," he spoke through gritted teeth.

"oh yeah? then why do you always assume that i'm such a bad person? just because i'm dating holly and you're not, doesn't give you the right to push me around all of the time. i know the looks you give me at practices and the little whispers you share with holly about me being there. well get used to it, buddy, because i'm not going anywhere for a while." daniel finished, crossing the fence and grabbing his stuff from the tree.

just as he was going to walk away, phil grabbed him by his elbow, yanking him back like he was a rag doll. his voice was just above a whisper and his breathe was hot on dan's face, just like the beating sun. "if you hurt her, i won't hesitate to kill you."

then phil walked away.

he always had to get that last word, didn't he?
