TRACK THIRTY: WARM

heavy sighs could be heard outside of the hospital room 303. if you walk merely a few feet behind the door you will find a group of teenage boys, all sighing heavily - as they were having a sighing contest.

sam puffed out his chest dramatically before sucking in large gulps of air. he quickly frowns and crosses his arm, letting out a short (but serious) sigh. like the kind of sigh a little brother gets from his older sister who is glaring at him from her position behind him at the wall.

holiday shakes her head as liam and phil clap, both of them shouting out their response to the boy's sigh.

"7!" phil says, being generous.

"9!" liam tops, only saying this because sam is his boyfriend.

the blonde beams brightly up at his boyfriend, phil laughs and holiday finally sits down, her leg bouncing dramatically. they were at the hospital for phil's remission check up, to see his if his cancer had suddenly expanded. it had been six months since he had returned home from his last chemo appointment, where the tall male nurse told daniel the small tumor was completely wiped out.

now, they all shut up as the door opens again and a different doctor enters, phil had seen all too many doctors these days. the woman made her way to the desk in front of their chairs, flashing them all a warm smile.

"hello, sorry i was wrapping up something in the break room." she chuckles before getting settled into her chair and pulling out papers with phil's name all over them.

"phil, welcome back, how have these past 6 months been treating you?" she asked, her name was dr. lipinski, and she had eyes like emeralds that sam had a strange infatuation with. he said he just respected her as a professional but even liam knew it was because he thought she was hot.

"i've been good, we released our second album." he smiled, the boys whopping behind him before quickly quieting again.

"that's amazing. well, i have some even better news. your cancer is in remission."

"what does that mean?" holiday asked.

phil sucked in a breath, liam patted his shoulder as the woman explained more.

"your cancer is gone, and it may stay like that forever, but it is mandatory to come back in every 6 to 9 months to do a scan and make sure it hasn't returned. but if i can say, mr lester, you are going to have a very good, long life." she smiled, flashing her pearly whites.

phil covered his mouth with his hand as he couldn't hold back the smile that spread to his cheeks. he knew his friends around him were cheering loudly, but everything had suddenly slowed down. remission. remission. he was good.

he had beat his cancer.

daniel hadn't been at the hospital because he was busy sleeping.

the brunet had been crunching all of his time into school work as midterms were coming up. he spent every day- as it seemed - to study for his exams, and last night he had attended a 3-hour long socratic seminar on ancient history for his ap history class. so phil let him sleep, knowing the boy was tired.

now, as phil crept into the house of the howell's, he could hear the soft whizzing of the fan and the shuffling of sheets as his lover tossed under the covers. he smiled softly to himself, taking a mental picture of dan sleeping so peacefully - he finally knew he would have many more nights with him.

he had kicked his shoes off at the door, so he carefully climbed over the brunet (careful of his long legs) and slid under the blanket. he pulled dan closer by his waist so they were chest to back. dan hummed slightly in his sleep, his body acknowledging there was someone else with him.

phil brushed the long hairs out of his eye, kissing his cheek before kissing his forehead too. "dan?" he asked, intertwining their legs, daniel's feet were cold.

the younger rolled over to face him, burying his face into phil's chest. he continued to sleep.

"daniel," phil said again, a little louder.

"what?" finally came a response, many seconds after phil spoke.

"you awake?" the older ran his bruised fingers through daniel's curls and down his neck.

"no."

"my cancer is gone."

dan went still before he looked up, pupils widening from the dark, gazing up at him. he quickly sat up, taking the duvet with him. phil's bare arms gathered goosebumps from the fan.

"what?" he spoke clearly, all of the fatigue gone.

"my cancer is gone," phil smiled, rolling onto his back.

dan smiled wildly into the dark of the room, his jaw falling open. he jumps onto phil, straddling his waist and peppering his face with kisses. he squealed with delight, his fingertips squeezing at the olders ribs. phil sqirms and laughs before dan takes him by the face and kisses him properly.

they were finally granted tomorrow.
