Joshua was standing in front of Erica, a whip in his hand. The whip was poised to strike, but he didn't move his wrist. Erica's expression was blank. But even she couldn't hide the emotions racing through her eyes.
They were changing so rapidly I couldn't pick out all of them. But I could tell that none of them were good. Then Joshua said something so surprising, my jaw dropped open. "Don't worry, I'm on your side, I won't hurt you."
"Why should I believe you?" Erica asked warily. Joshua took a knife out from behind his back and advanced on Erica. Her eyes widened. "Erica, no!" I shouted. But when he got to her, instead of hurting Erica, he cut through the ropes binding her to the chair. "Why did you cut me free?" Erica asked, bewildered. "Because I could never betray you." Joshua said. He proceeded to cut me free. By this time, Erica was standing up, she walked over to me, grabbed my hands, and helped me up. Joshua looked jealous. Then he shook it off and informed us, "I've been a double agent this whole time." I didn't believe him. "Why should we trust you?" I asked.
Erica was glaring at him coldly. She didn't believe a word he said. Joshua sighed. "Well remember when, in the whole Operation Tiger Shark thing, I shot at Erica. Well, I know Erica well, so if I actually wanted to hit her I would have shot so that she'd be hit even if she tried to dodge. And when you were in evil spy school, Ben, I said that you should just shoot enemy agents and be done with it, but every time I captured you two, I didn't kill you. I wanted you to get away."
When he finished, my first reaction was that I was so stupid to have missed this. Erica looked hurt. "You didn't even tell me your plan! You've hurt me so much Joshua! And now you think we can just forgive you and everything will go back to the way it was?"
Nobody answered. Joshua looked upset. I stood there awkwardly. Eventually, I told them to free the others.
Joshua led all of us back to the hotel in silence. But, right before we reached the hotel, Joshua asked us where he should sleep. We all agreed that we would take turns sleeping on the floor. Joshua would sleep on the floor today. Erica wanted to have Joshua sleep on the floor everyday. I don't think any of us trusted Joshua, not yet anyways. Erica was quiet the rest of the walk. Joshua lightly touched her arm to comfort her, but she pulled it away. He let his arm fall, looking hurt. Then, suddenly, he said "Wait! I almost forgot!" Then he pulled of his scars and took of his eyepatch. His eye was completely unscathed.
All of us were staring at him, gobsmacked. "Sorry," Joshua said. "Those were only for intimidation." "What else are you hiding from us," Erica asked accusingly.
"Nothing!" Joshua said, sounding upset. "I'm so sorry Erica. I didn't want to hurt you like that." Erica just fell back until she was walking beside me and said nothing. I glared at Joshua. He had a lot of nerve, thinking everything would just be fine! But then, what was fine? I realized that I really didn't know anything about Erica's past at all. When we got back to the hotel, we went straight to bed without a word to each other.
