You saunter along the footpath, jumping over twigs and cracks in the pavement, ignoring the nagging voice in the back of your head that reminds you that you have to be home soon. It's the first time you've ever been allowed to walk home without Hannah, so you know you must be home early to show Mum that you can be trusted. You walk about halfway when you start to hear footsteps. Just as your mother taught you, you step aside to let the walker pass. However, no one does. You dismiss the strangeness an continue on your way. You come to the bakery and stop to look at all the delicious cakes and biscuits. The footsteps are heard again. You glance over both shoulders. No one is there. Him. Pretending nothing had happened, you get back onto the footpath and head home. You keep hearing the footsteps. They are distant, but you still get scared. Exasperated, you stop, turn around and scan the street. No one is there, silly. You dismiss the footsteps as paranoia; a result of all the stranger-danger talks and the fact that you need to be home soon and this is the first time you've been put alone. Nonetheless you pick up the pace and begin to walk briskly home.
After what seems like an age, your feet turn you into your cul-de-sac. It's empty and has adopted an eerie atmosphere. You almost run around your mother's beloved rose garden and up the driveway. Thankfully, the footsteps have stopped. The front door is unlocked, so you rush inside and slam it shut.
"Good afternoon, Marnie." Your mother envelopes you in a bear hug. You didn't even realise she was at the door waiting, for you.
"Hi, Mummy!" you put on a smile, allowing yourself to forget what happened on the walk home.
"That took a little longer than I expected, but that's okay. How did it go?"
"It was fun!" you lie quickly, not feeling the least bit guiltly for lying so easily.
"Good," she returns to the kitchen. Your father steps out of the family room, leaving the television blaring.
"Hey, sweetheart!" he gives you a kiss on the forehead.
"Good afternoon, Daddy." you say, then slip past him.
You, quite literally, run into Hannah. She catches you just before you fall back down the stairs. You look up at her with the same admiration you always do. She has long dark hair and brown eyes. She's so pretty. You know you want to be EXACTLY like her when you're older. Scratch that, you want to BE her when you're older. The golden child.
"Hey, sis," she giggles, "How'd your walk go?"
You silently wish no one would ask so you could stop reliving the fear and stop lying.
"Good!" you sit in her beautiful room, on her bed, with her and talk until she announces that she has to leave for her date.
Your face falls. Her boyfriend, Mike, was always taking up her time.
"We'll talk tomorrow, okay?" she promises, "After you get home from school; Mike's driving me to school early for study."
"Okay. I'll tell you all the things that happen tomorrow," you lie, trying to keep up the charade of honesty.
Little did you know the lies were just beginning.
