Chap 4

No one is there.

No one is there.

Stomp.

Stomp.

Stomp.

Absolutely no one.

Oh, no. You will not be convinced. You are so hellbent on proving to yourself that this stalker is real. Then, and only then, you just might tell someone. Might. So you turn around, seeking proof that you are in fact not crazy, that you haven't conjured this man out of the depths of your subconscious mind.

You sharply intake a quick breath. Just a few metres behind you is a man. He is the tallest person you have ever laid eyes on; taller than your parents, taller than your teachers. He is scarily thin, rather like a skeleton than a man. He has bleached straight hair that ends just above his shoulder. He is completely dressed in black and white. His eyes are black, with a white pupil resembling that of a cat's eye. He smiles at you, revealing broken needle teeth almost blindingly white. He takes a menacing step towards you. That one step seems to break the spell. The world slows down around you and you turn and bolt home. As you run you hear his ominous laughter.

You turn the sharp corner into your street. Unlike the other days, you do not bother avoiding the beloved roses. No, you run straight through them and the evil thorns reach out and tear your black school stockings. The break the skin. Tiny droplets of dark blood ooze through the pale surface of your legs but remain still. You throw open the front door, slamming it into the wall behind it.

"Marnie!" your mother scolds. "That left a mark! You have to be more careful. Wait till your father sees this!"

"I'm sorry, Mummy," you whimper pathetically, your eyes fixed on the tiled floor. "I didn't mean to."

"Jesus, Marnie, what happened to your stockings?"

"I fell over..." you begin, feeling bad for lying yet again.

"They're expensive, Marnie, and now they're ruined!"

You apologise once again and hide in your room from the stalker you are now sure exists. There is a knock on the door and for a horrible moment you are positive it's him. The knocker lets herself in. Hannah. Relief floods through you.

"Marnie, why are you hiding?" Hannah asks, kneeling down and peering beneath your bed. She takes your hand and helps you out, but you remain silent, "Marnie, you can tell me," she tells you seriously. You look up at her. You can trust her, Marnie, it's Hannah. And so you take a quick breath and proceed to retell the events of your walks to and from school.

Afterwards Hannah doesn't say anything. She doesn't look at you and you are afraid you've upset her.

"Hannah?" You say quietly.

"I'm going to tell Mum and Dad." She declares, rising to her feet.

"No!" you plead, "Please, don't!"

"Why not?"

"I won't be able to walk home, and I don't like walking home with Mummy and Daddy."

"It's for your own safety." Hannah tells you in a matter-of-factly tone.

Eventually, Hannah succumbs to your pleas and agrees not to tell your parents.

But Hannah didn't know the mistake she had just made.
