Part Three
During all this time, I didn't tell anyone about what Alex did. Derrick could tell something was wrong, but never could figure out what and I wouldn't tell him. It really bothered him that I had grown distant. He figured I just needed space, so he started to come less and less. Then he didn't come at all. I realized, too late, that I had pushed away the one guy who I loved and trusted completely. My aunt noticed nothing out of the ordinary, or at least didn't show it. I didn't see Anika or Lucas much they kept to themselves. Looking back now I think Aunt Ashley knew, but didn't care enough to stop it. I didn't feel safe anywhere. My friends had kept their distance after my mother died. Not because they didn't care about me, but because I needed space and time to grieve. I started to spend more and more time alone.
It was in late October, that I missed my first period. I hoped and prayed that it would come, but it didn't. I went to the drug store and got a test. After I waited the longest 2 minutes of my life, I found out I was pregnant. I thought I didn't want the baby because it was conceived in rape, I thought I wanted an abortion. I needed help. I thought of Derrick, who I had hurt so much. I wondered if he still loved me. I called him.
He flew out the next day because I said it was important. We met for lunch at the restaurant down the street from where he was staying. I told him the whole story, starting from the phone call and ending when I decided I wanted his help, needed his help, needed him.
He stayed very quiet when I told the story. Afterward, he asked just one question, "Why didn't you tell me before?"
"Because I was scared." I told him, feeling like I was gonna cry.
"It's ok," he said, "We'll figure this out together." He reached his hand across the table and intertwined it with mine. Then met my eyes, "together forever and always," He promised. "I'll take care of you and the baby," he smiled, "We'll be a family and I'll make sure he can't hurt you anymore."
"I'm not sure I want to keep it," I explained to him.
"It's your choice, but I'm just saying that if you keep it or not, I'll be with you either way. I think you should stay at the hotel with me tonight instead of staying at the house where he can hurt you."
"Ok, sounds good. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning."
"I'll take you to that," he said.
"We can go back to the house today to get my cloths and some other stuff, Alex is working. We can tell Ashley that I'm staying at a friend's house and we can tell Anika what's going on at the house."
"Are you sure he won't be there?"
"Ya, he was gone before I left."
We left and got in to his truck. He drove the few blocks to the house. Alex's car wasn't there. Ashley greeted us in the kitchen.
"Hey, Bianca, I wondered where you had gotten too. Derrick, long time no see. Did you two patched up your fight?" she said cheerfully.
"Yeah it's kind of hard not to forgive her," Derrick said, lying for her benefit.
"Ashley, I'm gonna stay at Brooke's tonight. Derrick's gonna drive me there" I told her praying she wouldn't call and check.
"Ok, have fun, darling." was the only answer she gave me.
I ran up to Anika's room with Derrick close behind me. I knocked on the door and she called out a timid "Who's there?"
"It's me," I responded.
"Come in" I opened the door. "Hey, Bianca." When she saw Derrick who was standing behind me, "Hey Dare, what's up?"
I sighed and sat down on the bed and Derrick sat on the desk chair. "We have something to tell you," I said. Then I told her the entire story.
When I was done, she nodded and said, "I figured as much after he left me alone and didn't bother me. Then you started to be quieter and didn't talk anymore. But you got pregnant because of it? Seriously? That's not good."
"Ya, I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning to confirm it. Derrick is going with me."
"And she's not staying at the here tonight." Derrick interrupted. "She's staying with me."
"Derrick, can Anika come too? Please?" I asked him.
"Ya, there's a couch in the living room of my suite. She can sleep there."
"Alex is gonna be pissed when we both disappear," she said, fear in her eyes.
"He can't hurt us now," I told her, softly, "We won't be here and he won't know where we are. Plus if he does somehow find us we can always call the cops on him and we have Derrick to keep us safe. It's safer than staying here."
"At least you wouldn't be alone," Derrick added, moving to sit beside me and put his arm around me for the first time in too long.
"Ok, ok, I'll get packed." Anika said.
She packed all the cloths she would need. Derrick came with me as I packed. Then we headed to the hotel. As we walked by Ashley, Anika said, "Mom, I'm going to a friend's house and Dare is giving me a ride." Ashley didn't respond.
Once at the hotel, I curled up on the bed and watched lifetime movies. Anika paced back and forth. Derrick made a few phone calls, before coming to sit beside me.
Later, Derrick ordered dinner for us and left us so Anika and I could get dressed for bed. He came back into the room and crawled into bed with me. Anika was already passed out in the living room on the couch. I curled up in Derrick's arms, rested my head on his chest, and fell asleep feeling safe for the first time in a long time.
