"Morning, Lalna!" Nano chimed.

Lalna groaned, covering his eyes with one arm. “It’s too early,” he mumbled sleepily, rolling over onto his side.

Nano laughed. “Get up, you lazy fart. We have stuff to do today.”

Lalna heaved himself into a sitting position, blurrily glaring at the giggly Nano perched on the edge of his bed. “Happy, Nano?”

“Yeah,” she told him, planting a kiss on his cheek before sliding off the bed and bouncing down the stairs.

Lalna grumbled something incoherent after her, which she either didn’t hear or ignored. He ran one hand through his hair, glancing at his reflection in the window.

Christ, what would Sjin think? Lalna thought, chuckling to himself. One of the Magic Police sleeping with a possessed witch.

Startling himself out of his tired daze, he frowned, and muttered again, “What would Sjin think?”

Well, he sure wouldn’t be happy.

Lalna forced himself to rise from the tangle of sheets and follow Nano down the stairs. He found her sitting at their tiny table tucked away in the corner, two plates of bread before her.

“Come on,” she whined. “You’re so slow.”

Lalna grunted in response, grabbing some of the bread off one plate. Thinking about Sjin’s opinion of his current company put him in a bad mood.

“Wow, someone’s grouchy today, Lalna,” Nano said with a giggle, watching as the scientist ate and rifled through their various chests, looking for whatever project he hadn’t finished yesterday.

“I am not grouchy!” He snapped, letting a playful tone into his voice.

“Geez, whatever you say, grouchy pants,” Nano taunted as she drifted out the door, doubtlessly headed towards her farm, her animals, and her penguin.

As soon as she was gone, Lalna set down the materials he’d been collecting. He used the BatCave door to slip out of the house, going quietly on foot.

When he was far enough away, he fumbled in his pocket for his jetpack’s controls. After a moment, the metal machine roared to life, easily lifting the scientist off the ground.

Unsteadily making his way through the morning landscape, Lalna headed for the tower he knew Sjin would be residing at currently. As he wove among the trees, he wondered what they would eventually do about Nano - she was dangerous, but Lalna still loved her.

As fate would have it, Lalna had not been the only one thinking of Nano, it seemed. Sjin had made plans for them to use portals to cross the area between Panda Labs and the Magic Police headquarters.

Lalna delayed them all day, telling Sjin he had to finish this up, start a new spell, build this gateway.

He wasted time, hoping merely that Sjin would forget about Nano and decide to go after someone else - maybe Nilesy, or Lomadia.

That night, as the scientist guilty twisted and turned in bed, Sjin couldn’t help but look up. Green eyes met blue, and Lalna hurriedly glanced away.

“She has you under a spell, Lalna,” Sjin told him with a sympathetic look, as though he really believed it. “I’m trying to save you.”

The knot in Lalna’s stomach tightened, and he squeezed his eyes shut, guilt for what they were going to do clawing at him.
