Chapter 12

**Charlotte**

I fell asleep with Avery on the couch after Mandi left. My dad hadn’t been around for the past few days because he had been with my mom. Today though, my mom was coming home. She still had to lie down but at least she was home and Avery and I could protect her. We would probably have to tell her about angels but what if she tells other people or something happens to her again because she knows. I was scared.

I got up from the couch and covered Avery’s sleeping body with a blanket and got up to get some breakfast. When I got up I heard him grunt but he fell quickly back to sleep. I went into the kitchen and heated up the stove and a pan. It was nine in the morning and my dad should be home in a few hours. I grabbed two eggs from the fridge and put them into the pan. As they fried up I put on some music and started dancing. I missed dancing. I used to dance all the time and I was really good but I just stopped after all the bullying and stuff. I was dancing around the kitchen, humming a little bit, when Avery came over to me. I stopped realizing I had woken him and I was embarrassed.

“Why did you stop?” He asked me.

“Oh, um, I don’t know. Sorry-“ I was cut off. He grabbed my phone and played a slower song. He grabbed my hands, and we danced gracefully around the room. He was an amazing dancer and it was the most fun dance I had ever been in. Probably because I was with him and I felt the tingles I always felt when I was with him. I was happy and couldn’t stop smiling. Right before we were about to do a spin, the smoke detector went off.

“Oh shit.” I said under my breath. Avery laughed and grabbed a towel. He started swatting the air as I cleaned up the overcooked burning egg. We cleared the smoke and cleaned up.

“So I think it would be safer if we went out to grab some breakfast?”

“I agree.” We laughed about the incident and we grabbed some clothes. We left and went to the Denny’s down the street. We moved into the chairs and the waitress came over to us.

“Can I get you something to eat?” She asked. She had a smoker’s voice and smelled like cigarettes. I scrunched my nose at her.

“Uh, yeah, chocolate chip pancakes and an orange juice for me please” I told the waitress.

“Coffee, black, no sugar, and bacon, eggs, and hash browns please.” Avery said. I hated coffee and I had no idea how he could drink it, especially black.

The waitress nodded her head at our orders, scribbled them down on her notepad and walked away.

“SO YOUR MOM IS COMING HOME TODAY, RIGHT?” Avery yelled overly excited.

“Haha, yeah she is. Why are you so excited?” I asked

“I have no clue actually…” We laughed together. He was so awkward sometimes but I could tell I was falling for him. The waitress came over with the coffee and my orange juice, being overly nice to Avery. She was not his type, obviously, but she tried to get his attention anyways. She was way older than him, why would she flirt with him!? Just as she walked away,  Summer and her Posse walked in. Why did they have to come!? Could I ever have a day without a tragedy occurring?

“Guys look, the whore is here!” She yelled to the people in Denny’s. Oh great, she had to tell everyone her feelings. The older people there gave her looks but Avery and I tried to ignore her. She came over to our table, “You deaf? Because I am pretty sure you heard me. What happened to Parker? Did he run from you?” She asked me these questions while spitting in my face. I stood up.

“You don’t own me! You don’t own anyone! Grow up! Okay? Parker happened to move. I am not a whore, I haven’t slept with the entire school like you. No one likes you! You are just a bully in need of attention! Which you already get enough of so why do you want more? Your friends probably hate you since all you do is bitch so next time you want to call someone a name, make sure they deserve is slut!” I yelled to her right in her face. Avery stood up awkwardly and him and I left Denny’s. We left a few dollar bills for the drinks before we left so we didn’t get in trouble.

“That was powerful…” Avery said as we reached the car.

“Thanks. It felt amazing.” I said shyly. I usually don’t have outbursts like that.

“Well it was amazing. We never got to eat though… We can eat at home. Hopefully the kitchen doesn’t catch on fire and we can actually eat…” He told me laughing. I playfully punched his arm.

“Okay.” I said still giggling. We drove home and he cooked up some eggs and bacon. We ate and as we were cleaning up after ourselves, my parents walked through the door.

“MOM!” I yelled as I ran to her.

“Be careful with her Char.” My dad warned.

“OK.” I gently hugged her. My mom hugged me back and looked curiously at Avery.

“Oh mom, Avery and I have been hanging out a lot. I know what I told you before and stuff but we have some things we want to tell you when you get better.”

“Honey, I already know. I am an angel too…” She whispered in a horse voice.
