Chapter 22

Abby's POV

The rest of break absolutely flew by. My Christmas was nice, but nothing special. Just the same old thing, my mother and I exchanging gifts. I got her a hot chocolate maker. We tried it, and it makes the best coco I've ever tasted. She got me a bulletin board for my room to put pictures on. She also got me a few DVDs, make up, and other things like that.

It was Monday morning. My alarm went off at six a.m. sharp, as always. That awful feeling of the first day after break kicked in. I felt groggy and miserable. Not only was it the first day back, but I was dreading even seeing Mark in the hallways. 'Why did I do this to myself?' I wondered, nearly rolling on the floor to get out of bed. I sat down on my floor for a minute, seriously considering taking a lazy day and rocking sweats, an un-brushed ponytail, and no make up so I could sleep for another half and hour. I inhaled the air, and the aroma of eggs and bacon filled me up.

I practically bolted down the stairs and into the dining room to find a plate of scrambled eggs and crispy bacon with hot coco on the table. My mom was finishing up her own eggs when she saw me with a childish grin on my tired face.

"Good morning, Ab." she said, smiling warmly at me.

"What's the occasion?" I asked her.

"I figured you would need a pick-me-up for the first day back. You look tired." she said, coming over to me and kissing my forehead.

"Thank you, mom." I said gratefully.

I sat down and ate quickly. I loved eggs and bacon, but I didn't want to be late. My mom left shortly after I finished. I ran upstairs and got dressed along with a quick swipe of make up. I managed to get my hair into a decent looking ponytail.

Just as I was finishing, Brandon came to the door.

I met him outside. We walked to Holly's house, which took about two minutes. In that two minutes, I felt a little awkward around him. I was expecting it anyway. After all, I rejected him later than most people would. All of the emotions and passion we felt toward each other were poured into that short moment. Oddly, even after all of that happened, I really didn't feel as uncomfortable as I did after we kissed that one day in his basement.

Once we'd gotten Holly, the rest of the walk to school was great. We were laughing about good times we'd had over break, and it finally felt as though we were as close as we used to be. Once Brandon had gone, Holly grabbed my wrist excitedly and turned me toward her. People gave us dirty looks as we stood in the middle of the hallway.

"Are you and Brandon getting together?!" she asked, bursting with excitement.

"No." I said, looking at her curiously.

"He was flirting with you. It was, like, intense flirting. Ab, I'm almost positive he likes you!" she grinned widely.

"I already know he does..." I told her, trailing off.

"Huh?" she asked, looking confused now.

"We-we kind of...uh..." I stammered.

"Abby! You didn't..." she said, eyes wide open with her mouth agape. Her grip tightened on my wrist.

"No! We just hooked up is all." I said, looking at the floor.

"When?" she asked.

"A few hours after you left my house on Saturday morning."
