"The necklace," Isabelle gasped. "It's pulsing."

Leon could see a bright red light pulsing in and out from the ruby before wind rushed through the room. All five people around the pentagram snapped their heads up toward the sky and a black smoke circled into the middle of them, a loud growling coming from the creature.

"Valak is among us!" Magnus shouted over the wind and the creature. Leon snapped his bow-staff and the halves phased into his daggers so that he was prepared. "Do not break the bond!"

"Hold on!" Jace yelled to Clary.

"I'm trying!"

"It is time," Magnus called out. "The demon demands payment."

"What does it want?" Alec questioned Magnus.

"We must each relinquish a beloved memory of the one we love the most!" Magnus explained.

Through the swirling smoke, Leon could see the fiery outline of the demon's body and eyes as a blue light omitted from Isabelle's chest first. Through the smoke, Leon could faintly see the outline of Alec smiling.

Then, the demon took a memory from Clary — a memory of her mother.

When Alec's memory came out, a memory of Jace, it seemed understandable — Jace was his parabatai, his best friend, his brother. Leon felt the same for Kai; he loved him, they were brothers, too.

But Alec didn't see it that way — he almost seemed scared as the memory vanished with the demon.

"No, it's not true!" he shouted. Leon furrowed his eyebrows and watched Jace look to Alec. The Lightwood seemed genuinely ashamed of the memory and tried to deny that he loved Jace. "The demon deceived me!"

"Do not break the bond!" Magnus yelled.

"Alec, it's okay!" Isabelle assured her brother.

"No!"

Alec snatched his hands out of Magnus' and Jace's hands, breaking the bond that was holding the demon.

"Alec!"

"No!"

With the bond broken, a blast erupted and it threw the rest of them backwards. Leon and Kai sprang into action. Kai ran toward one side of the room, where Magnus had flown into a wall. Magnus was straining his magic and Kai was standing near him like a guard in case the demon tried to attack Magnus.
