(15) Working Together

The next day they both woke up naked and cuddling in their bed. He pulled her to him and said "Good morning Mrs Barnes" 

She giggled and said "Good morning Mr Barnes." 

They both got up and started to get ready for work. They rode together they went into the hospital where they got all kinds of congratulations from co workers who were un able to attend the wedding. Hensley went up to the ICU floor with Bucky she checked on her other patients then they they went into Dawson's room to see Katie sleeping on the cot.

Kellie gave them the chart of Dawson.  Bucky and her read the brain waves since the day before where they weren't there. They checked his relexes again and he curled his toes again and they tried to get him to squeeze her hand and he still wasn't doing it. 

Katie woke up and said "You guys are back." 

"Yeah sorry yesterday was our wedding day." Bucky said

"You are working no honey moon?'" she said 

"We kinda had one over the summer. We already have two kids together ." Hensley said

"Oh.. yeah vacations alone don't come easy when you have kids. We have three 2 girls and 1 boy." Katie said with a smile. 

"We are gonna do a surgery this afternoon Katie to see how bad the damage is." Bucky said 

"Okay what ever you need to do Dr Barnes." Katie said 

That afternoon Bucky was in his OR doing the surgery. Hensley stood in the viewing area and watched him do the surgery. Bucky said "Hensley darlin  you ready to make my notes." 

"Yeah" she said into the intercom. 

"Okay baby so far it looks like he has some minor damage to his frontal lobe and some minor damage to his motor strip." he said as she wrote it all down. 

"Okay any damage any where else?' She said 

"No not that I can tell. I want to order another CT scan for tomorrow morning" he said 

"Okay I will get that ordered for you. " she said 

"Thank you baby.. you can go back to the floor I'm done here I got it cleaned it out and I've seen all the damage." he said as he threw his tools into the pan and pulled off his head gear. 

She went upstairs to the ICU floor and started to work the rest of the shift. Bucky came up a few hours later to see Dawson. "Hey baby" he said once come up to the ICU floor. 

"Hey.." she said 

"You okay?' he said

"I'm tired.." she said as they walked to Dawson's room. Katie stood up when they walked into Dawson's room. 

Bucky swallowed hard and said "Um Katie.. while I was in surgery I was able to see the damage and there was a minor damage to his frontal lobe which includes his motor strip which is his body movements as well as other things." 

"What are the other things." Katie said 

"Katie that includes the following things. 

Personality, behavior, emotions Judgment, planning, problem solving Speech: speaking and writing (Broca's area) Body movement (motor strip) Intelligence, concentration, self awareness" 

"So if he wakes up he's not gonna be the same person and not be able to talk. He is a daddy a lawyer." Katie said 

Hensley walked over to Katie and hugged her. "Katie you have to be strong in this moment. I know this hard but you are his wife and you need to be strong for him cause of the kids okay." 

Bucky walked out and pressed his hands against the nurse's desk and his dad came up to him. "James what's wrong." he said 

"I have a patient that is possibly brain dead. He barely has any brain activity. He's not gonna be the same person if he does survive his wife is a mess." he said 

"James you did nothing wrong I read all your notes and hers. You did what you were suppose to do. Let me see his brain waves chart." James said 

Bucky gave him his chart and James looked over his chart and James went into the room and checked the guys eyes then checked his reflexes only one foot started to curl his toes the other one didn't. "Keep an eye on him." he said to Hensley. 

"I will." she said 

Around 2 AM Bucky and Hensley were asleep in an on call room on the ICU floor. Hensley's pager and Bucky's pager started going crazy Bucky looked over at them. "Baby get up it's Dawson' 

They both got up and put all their stuff back on and ran into Dawson's room  Hensley went into action she hit the code blue button and then got the defribrillator. Bucky got the paddles ready and he said "Clear." then he shocked him. 

Still nothing happened. Bucky turned up the defribrillator again and yelled "Clear" and then shocked him. He still couldn't get a heartbeat so they tried again . Bucky said "Last time baby I can't shock him anymore." as he shocked him one last time. 

Hensley listened to his heart and looked at her watch. "Time of death 220AM" as she took off her gloves. She wrote it in his chart and cancelled the CT scan that was scheduled for the next morning. Bucky rested his forehead against the back of her head. She grabbed his hand and whispered "Baby there was nothing you could he already gone he was already half brain dead. But I'll get a autopsy done if Katie says it's okay." 

"I'll make that phone call." he said 

Bucky picked up the phone on the nurse's station desk and called Katie and made the phone call that he always dreads to make. Dawson isn't the first patient that he's lost but he's the first one that he's lost when everything was fine when he was brought in.
