Life had no reason to hate Gus. He had never done anything wrong to it, and he had been a fairly decent human lately. He was treating Elize like she deserved, and he was practically being a saint to his family and friends. Everyone always says that life works in mysterious ways and that you shouldn't question those ways, but Gus always figured otherwise. He believed, personally, that the devil had a plan for him and was impacting Gus' life in order to fit his agenda. This is why Elize was leaving. Their lives were going just too good and you could say that "fate" didn't quite like that.

CANDLELIGHT : chapter four, cont.

Elize was gone today. Gus woke up in an empty bed, in a room that felt so hollow and lifeless. He already missed her, which instantly made him check his phone to see if she had sent anything and she did. A picture of herself with the caption "Missing you already! xoxo." Gus sent back a picture of his disheveled-looking self and then texted "missing u already." He had a strong feeling he wouldn't be able to survive without Elize, but he was going to try and make the money for a plane ticket. He figured it would take a few lonely, cold, sleepless months, but who could tell if he was right? It was the weekend, so Gus didn't have anything to do. So he decided to sit in his room and waste away all day, it was his most favorite thing to do. He lit up a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. After a few drags, he started feeling an overwhelming hatred for himself. This made absolutely no sense, yet that thought just caused him to hate himself more. For some strange reason, after he was done with his smoke he went into the bathroom and decided to brush his teeth. He brushed, spit, and looked at himself in the mirror. He stared, as if he was looking at something interesting. He took a really deep sigh, put air into his cheeks and blew it out at the mirror. Gus shook his head back and forth, he became unreasonably hateful towards his appearance suddenly. He turned on the water in the tub as if he was going to take a bath. He sat his phone down on the bathroom sink, opened up the medicine cabinet, found anything that he knew would make him feel better, and took it. Not enough to kill himself, but enough to keep him high for a while. He then started up his and Elize's playlist, got a few candles from downstairs, turned the bathroom lights off and locked the door. He then stripped down only to his underwear, lit the candles, and sank himself into the hot water. His whole brain felt numb and his lips did too. Gus started feeling dizzy and tired; this typically happened but for some reason, it seemed heavier this time. He barely had time to think before he passed out in the water.

RESUSCITATION : chapter four, cont.

He woke up to his phone ringing, the bathroom door being knocked on, and lukewarm water engulfing his tingling body. He shouted "If it's mom knocking, I'm fine. I just fell asleep." His mother shouted back, "I have to pee, hurry up and get out." He jumped out of the tub, grabbed a towel and wrapped it around his waist. He grabbed his phone and declined the call without even looking, and he turned off his music. When he walked out of the bathroom and into his room, he was a bit upset at how his mom didn't even ask if he was alright. What mentally stable person passes out in a dark bathroom in the bathtub? Gus, apparently. He checked who called, it was obviously Elize, and forty times, too. His noggin still felt like mush, but he managed to call her back. ring, ring, ring, voicemail. Again, he called. ring, ring, ring, voicemail. He stopped after that and just sent a text instead. With no clue what to do now, he put on some clothes and grabbed a $20 from his wallet. Stuffing the money and his phone into his ripped jeans pocket, he opened his door and walked out. Gus stomped down the stairs and before he walked through the door into the outside world, he shouted "I'll be back whenever, mom." Receiving no response, he left anyways.
